Default (New) Illinois license plate registration

After hearing the State (in an effort to save $$$ and save the planet by going paperless) will no longer send a paper license plate renewal notification I signed up online. Yesterday (11-30-15) I received an email notifying me that my sticker had expired on 11-30-15.

Now "If you do not renew by the last day of the month following your renewal month, you will be subject to a $20 late fee. Also, law enforcement can issue a citation for driving a motor vehicle with an expired Illinois license plate registration."

Thanks for the electronic heads up Jessie White!

I registered on or about the 15th and only received a confirmation that I had registered. I stopped at the Lombard facility on the 25th and got my new sticker.

Well, they did give you yesterday to get the car registration renewed.

If I read the bolded part right, you have until December 31st to renew without paying a late fee (renewal month was November, therefore December would be the month following). Of course, that doesn't preclude the LEOs from giving you a ticket.

This was brought to my attention by an email from a co-worker. I think the State should be responsible for notifying drivers of changes to laws and processes (same with FOID holders). I ducked over there at lunch and purchased my new sticker, $101.00 + $2.37 CC service charge.

My point here was just to keep an eye on your expiration dates, don't expect the State to do it for you...

So if they're not sending out registration renewal notifications, do you just go to the nearest Secretary of State facility?

Never mind. I found the answer. It sounds more like a budget issue at this point. Maybe when our wonderful politicians get their heads out of their asses, they'll start sending out notices again.

CHICAGO — The Illinois Secretary of State’s office has suspended mailing out notices that your vehicle registration is expiring.

The move is blamed on the state’s budget impasse.

A spokesperson said it will save the state $450,000 a month.

Hundreds of thousands of Illinois license plates expired at midnight Dec. 1 – but many vehicle owners likely did not receive a notice in the mail.

E-mail notices are not affected.

Drivers can check when their registration expires on the secretary of state’s website at: cyberdriveillinois.com.

New stickers can be ordered online or at any state driver’s license facility.

Is there a way to get e-mail reminders? I'm not seeing it.
