Forum function question...
Two things have changed recently on the forum...why?
1. Can't use a "great than" symbol or a "less than" symbol anymore. If you do, any text that you type following either of those symbols is deleted...and gone if you go back to edit.
2. If you post then hit edit, you used to get about 1 minute to edit w/o a "lasted edited by..." Now, you can edit something immediately after posting, and you get that message at the bottom of your post.
What is going on in the first case....why the change in the second?
EDIT: in this post, I typed the actual symbols in the first question. It DIDN'T delete all the text following the symbols, but deleted the symbols...went to fix by typing "greater than/less than" and had that done w/in 20 seconds...still showed the "last edited by...." message.

I don't know about the greater than/less than issue, but I noticed the same thing on the edits. I frequently read my post again and sometimes I notice a typo or awkward wording so I correct it. Now it shows as a edit.

Many web site applications have issues the greater than and less than symbols being used because those are characters used in the HTML language to create the page/text format, like bold, or itallic, or to begin a new line, etc.... It becomes difficult for the web application to tell the difference between the data in a field if the 'greater than' and 'less than' are meant to be literal, or meant to be HTML markup code. Most web applications just throw an error if a user enters them.

Ok its not the > or the <
That kind of behavior is normally a plugin they added. Either turning off html code in post which was default I believe or adding a plugin that looks for the symbols as wrappers will cause that.
I host forums for a living so I know that's a possibility for the cause. But I cant say for sure since I don't host this one

Also I noticed the insta edited thing which is annoying since I normally reedit every post I make fixing errors from the crazy on the fly spell checker I use. It swaps out words on me sometimes so now it looks like I'm editing most of my post when I'm just fixing errors.

The immediate "Edited" deal has been talked about in the Help section.
I can't understand why things like troubleshooting or testing is done in a "production" environment. If there is a problem, then there should be a test environment that is used only for things like that. Once a fix or an improvement is ready, it can be moved to the production side.

The less than and greater than symbols are standard HTML codes. For example, to make some thing bold you put < b > in front of it and < /b > at the end (without the spaces). For italics, use < i > ... < /i >. You can <u>underline</u> too with < u > underline < /u >.

Another thing changed is avatar spacing. My call name here is "FOURSPEEDVETTE". It used to be all in one line. Now it's divided up and looks terrible. I didn't change it. I've inquired twice about it to get it changed back but haven't gotten any respose.

The issue with the angle brackets is not unique to this site, so I'm guessing it's an issue/feature with the VBulletin engine.

Its somewhat unique since I own a TON of vbulletin sites I went and tested it on one and the brackets worked just fine in every combo I could come up with. The brackets get removed here when they are parsed as wrapping around an item. A bracket used when not in a format that would be considered wrapped around a word or text isn't removed.
On the site I went to test with which doesn't have very many plugins installed ignored the brackets > and < completely.

Try a different computer, or at least a different web browser and see what it looks like.
These screen shots are from a different computer than yesterday.
Mac OS X using Firefox web browser:
Windows 7 using Firefox web browser:
Now look what happens when I use Internet Explorer!
Windows 7 with IE web browser:
Your user name is split
Looks like it is a web browser issue.
Try a different one and see what happens.
