I see people have thanks in their profiles and I wanted to add some thanks to a few folks but didn't see how to do this.

There is a Thanks button located in applicable posts

Not all posts will show the Thanks button because not all sections have it turned on. And you can't Thank your own posts so you won't see it in your own posts.
