Greetings from Dallas - new C5 owner, toy for my son and I...
Hello everybody, I'm new to the American car world as an owner - I just picked up a used C5 targa top manual trans in Navy Metallic blue to use as a weekend car that my 9yr old son and I can have some fun in and enjoy the weather.
I'm in Plano, recently moved, originally from Southern California (30yrs there) and I'm a semi-reformed CA street tuner kid with lots and lots of hours building and modifying 4-cylinder turbo rear wheel cars, blowing stuff up with nitrous and otherwise wasting perfectly good rubber in the mountains.
I wanted something with a manual trans that was very affordable and reasonable that my son and I could get out and about in - I'm an aviation fanatic and I initially tried to get him interested in flying so that we could fly together and I was gonna build a kit plane - however he honestly just isn't that jazzed about things with propellers and he is absolutely obsessed with cars and demonstrates good driving instincts whenever I take him karting.
The car I picked up has (obviously) alot of mileage being a 99, however it has a very clean Carfax and was pampered by its two owners for years, the clutch feels great and everything is in shockingly good condition. I was surprised there weren't more manuals for sale as I somehow expected Vettes to be driven by MT purists as much as tuners are but apparently I was mistaken :P
In any event, I'm looking forward to shaking the car down over the next few months to see if anything falls off or pops, but despite having 180k miles on it, nothing appears to be leaking and there's no evidence of burning oil, which is impressive.
If the engine proves out to be in good enough shape, I'd love to throw a cam in it and an exhaust just for fun, but first up - I'd like to try and connect with some Vette Veterans (ah hah) locally, as I'd like to get my head screwed on straight with regard to care & feeding of the car, as I'd like to keep it in as good of shape as it is moving forward and not put the previous owners' efforts to waste.
I'm experienced with building motors and what not with Asian cars, but this is my first time around the block with an Amurrican, so... consider me a complete idiot and I'll take all the advice I can get!
