C: TECHNICAL BULLETINS. RECALLS..INFORMATION

TOP TIER DETERGENT GASOLINE

This is from August 2004 Tech Link

This information applies to all 2005 and prior General Motors passenger cars and trucks (US and Canada only)
Top Tier Detergent Gasoline, a new class of gasoline with enhanced detergency, will be appearing at retail stations of some fuel marketers. This gasoline meets new, voluntary deposit control standards developed by GM, BMW, Honda and Toyota.
The US EPA requires all gasoline sold in the US to contain a detergent additive. However, the requirement is minimal and in many cases is not sufficient to keep engines clean. A higher level of detergent is needed than what is required by the EPA. Top Tier Detergent Gasoline exceeds the detergent requirements imposed by the EPA.
The four corporations recognized the benefits to both the vehicle and the consumer. Also, joining together emphasized the low detergency is an issue of concern to several automotive companies.
All vehicles will benefit from using Top Tier Detergent Gasoline, which will help keep engines cleaner than gasoline containing the lowest additive concentration set by the EPA. Clean engines help provide optimal fuel economy and performance, and reduced emissions. Those vehicles that have experienced deposit related problems would especially benefit from use of Top Tier Detergent Gasoline.
The Top Tier program, begun on May 3, 2004 is a voluntary program initiated by the four automotive companies. Some fuel marketers have already joined, although not all fuel marketers will offer Top Tier Detergent Gasoline. Once fuel marketers make public announcements, a list of all fuel marketers meeting Top Tier standards will be made available. For now, it will be necessary to look for the “Top Tier” designation at the gas pump.

Stainless Steel Brake Hoses

This report is from the July 2004 GM Techlink publication

Owners of some Corvettes have experienced Service ABS, Service Traction Control messages. Wheel speed sensor codes may be set. Replacing the OEM rubber brake hoses with aftermarket stainless steel brake hoses may cause this condition.
It is believed that the metal in the brake lines conducts static electricity, causing confusion in the wheel speed sensors.
GM says the brake hoses must be returned to original rubber ones before the case can be investigated.

2003 Corvette-Cadillac XLR new fuel tank system

This report is from the March 2004 GM Techlink publication

Partway through model year 2003, a new fuel tank system was introduced on the Corvette. This system continues with slight differences in the 2004 Corvette and Cadillac XLR.
For 2003 Corvettes only, this system was designated by RPO code FFS. However, this name has been unofficially applied to all vehicles with the new system.

ADVANTAGES AND FEATURES
The new fuel tank system was designed to accommodate future LEV 2 emission requirements. This was accomplished by moving as many components and fuel lines as possible inside the fuel tanks, to minimize hydrocarbon emissions. A flexible metal crossover hose assembly replaces the former rubber one, because the permeable rubber allowed a small amount of hydrocarbon to pass through.
The redesign also includes more isolation and noise control for the electric fuel pump, which now has greater flow capacity to supply higher output engines.
On the XLR only, a speed control module slows the fuel pump when the engine is idling to further control pump noise.

COMPONENT LAYOUT
Two fuel tanks are used, and they’re joined by crossover plumbing. The left side (driver side) tank is considered the primary, and the right side (passenger side) is secondary.
Each tank contains a sensor module, which includes a float and resistor card.
On the left side, the sender module includes a reservoir, containing the turbine fuel pump. There’s also a primary fuel pressure regulator and a venturi pump. The left tank is also supplied by the fuel fill hose, and has a rollover vent valve.
On the right side, the sender module contains a secondary fuel pressure regulator and a siphon jet pump. There is also a fill-limiting valve FLVV.

OPERATION
When the fuel tanks are filled, fuel first fills the left tank. As the fuel rises to the level of the crossover, fuel flows into the right tank. As fuel occupies the interconnected tanks, air is forced to vent from the tanks, through the FLVV in the right tank. When both tanks are full, the FLVV float in the right tank closes, preventing fuel from entering the vent system. This also causes fuel to back up in the fill hose, causing the gas pump nozzle to shut off.
When the engine is running, the turbine fuel pump in the left tank pressurizes the fuel fee pipe. The entire fuel supply system, from the pump to the injectors, is pressurized. The turbine pump creates more pressure and more fuel flow than the engine needs. Excess pressure and excess fuel is allowed to bleed back into the left tank by the primary fuel pressure regulator within the tank.
The pressure regulator is in the fuel tank, not on the fuel rail on the engine. This type of fuel system is called returnless, or demand. This means that excess fuel is diverted before it leaves the tank, instead of passing through the fuel rail before being diverted. The result is that hot fuel is not constantly returning from the engine compartment, so the fuel in the tank stays cooler, improving evaporative emissions.
The majority of the pressurized fuel is directed through the filter and on to the fuel feed pipe to the engine, where it is injected into the cylinders for combustion.
Some of the pressurized fuel is directed through a feed pipe inside the crossover hose, to a siphon jet pump in the right tank. The jet pump relies on the venturi effect to use pressurized fuel to draw additional fuel from the tank. The combined fuel then flows from the right tank to the left tank, through a return pipe inside the crossover hose. The jet pump is able to move enough fuel to ensure that all of the fuel in the right tank is consumed before the level in the left tank begins to drop.
The return tube in the left tank has an anti-siphon hole, so the fuel in the left tank does not siphon back to the right side when the vehicle is shut down.
Some of the pressurized fuel is directed to a venturi pump in the left tank. This pump uses fuel flow to siphon fuel from the main tank into the reservoir, to keep the turbine pump supplied with fuel at all times. As the left tank fuel level drops, the venturi pump scavenges all of the remaining fuel into the reservoir, regardless of the vehicle’s attitude.
When the engine is shut off and the turbine pump stops, a reverse flow check valve maintains pressure in the system to ensure rapid pressure buildup during the next startup cycle.

OPERATION OF FUEL LEVEL GAUGE
When the fuel system is operating as designed, starting with both tanks full, the left tank will remain full until the right tank is depleted. Then the left tank will be emptied.
Each fuel tank has its own sensor. The PCM supplies a reference of 5 volts to the two sensors. Each sensor operates across a range from full (2.5 volts) to empty (0.7 volts). The PCM monitors the fuel level sensor voltages and calculates how much fuel is in the two tanks. The readout of the IP fuel level gauge is a result of this calculation.

GM OIL LIFE SYSTEM...HOW DOES IT REALLY WORK?

This is taken from the May 2003 GM Techlink publication
How often should engine oil be changed? 3,000 miles, 5,000 miles, 7,500 miles, 10,000 miles? Actually, all of these are correct, depending on operating conditions. Oil life is affected by many factors other than just miles driven. The type of driving, temperature, and engine load all play a part.
That’s why GM has developed the GM Oil Life System, an electronic watchdog that keeps track of all these variables and notifies the driver when it’s time to change oil. This system has become standard equipment on nearly all GM products since 2000.
Briefly, the Oil Life System is programmed with a certain number of engine revolutions. As the engine runs, this number is reduced until it reaches zero, and the Oil Life light or message comes on. But there’s more. Operating the engine under low or high temperatures, and under high load conditions subtracts (penalizes) extra revolutions, so the light comes on sooner. Changing engine oil according to actual need rather than an inflexible schedule provides several benefits.
First is simplified determination about when to change oil. No more decisions about normal conditions vs. severe conditions. Second are reduced operating costs for GM's customers, who now have to change oil only when it’s needed. Third is minimizing the amount of used oil that must be disposed of. And fourth, engines will always be running with sufficiently fresh oil, for long life.
Traditionally, the vehicle maintenance schedule has been based on miles or time, while the oil change interval is now based on the GM Oil Life System.
When the change engine oil light or message comes on, it means that service is required on the vehicle. I should be serviced as soon as possible within the next 600 miles. It is possible that, under the best conditions, the engine oil life system may not indicate that vehicle service is necessary for over a year. However, engine oil and filter must be changed at least once per year, and at this time the system must be reset.

HOW DO I RESET?

The oil-reset information is in your owners’ manual. This is how to reset the 2001-2004 corvette.
Turn the ignition to ON, with the engine off.
Press the trip button so the OIL LIFE percentage is displayed.
Press RESET and hold for two seconds. OIL LIFE REMAIN 100% will appear.

2003 Convertibles and Z06 rear deck lid not flush or only one strut on hinge.

Technical Service Bulletin 03-08-66-001 dated 01/13/03
This bulletin calls for replacing the RH deck lid hinge and installing two rear struts. This is not a recall, but a bulletin telling the dealer how to do the repair for this complaint, and is covered while the car is under warranty.

AUDIBLE SPARK KNOCK (DETONATION) MIL ILLUMINATED

Technical Service Bulletin 02-06-04-023 dated 05/01/02
If you have DTC P0332 set (replace rear bank knock sensor and rtv area around sensor) This applies to 1998-2002 Camaro, Corvette, and Firebird with 5.7L engine (vin G RPO LS1)

DOOR GLASS RATTLE

Technical Service Bulletin 83-15-05 dated 04/24/1998
This bulletin refers to door glass rattles in the full down position when closing the door. This rattle is probably the result of the glass rattling against the regulator pulley and cable guide.
Remove the trim pad, clean cable guide and roller with general purpose cleaner. Install a piece of hook and loop material (loop side) to the center of the roller and also to the front or rear green color cable guide. Reinstall the trim pad.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR AGM BATTERIES

This is a quote from the August 2002 Tech Link Publication
The Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery uses absorbent glass mats to hold a small amount of electrolyte in contact with the plates. The battery uses gas recombinant technology, which means the gases produced at the plates are recombined to form water before they escape. This battery design offers higher power for lower weight, and is more resistant to high temperatures, vibration and cycling, making it ideal for the Chevrolet Corvette.
The AGM battery may be charged using the new automatic charges. However, when using a conventional charger, limit the rate to 10 amperes or less. Do not allow the battery to charge at 3 amperes or more for longer than 10 hours, or 10 amperes or more for longer than 5 hours. When these limits are reached, allow the battery to stand overnight, then resume charging, if further charging is required.
Check the voltage every 30 minutes and remove the battery from charge when the voltage reaches 15 volts at 3-10 amperes. The state of charge is now at 90 to 95%.

HYDRAULIC CLUTCH FLUID DISCOLORATION

This is a quote from the August 2002 Tech Link Publication the hydraulic clutch system of 1997-2002 Chevrolet Corvettes may appear discolored. This discoloration is the result of carbon black used in the seal manufacturing process-leaching out into the hydraulic fluid used in the clutch system.
The discoloration may also collect on the inside of the clutch reservoir at the top of the fluid. This discoloration does not affect the operation of the clutch system and should not be considered a reason to flush the clutch hydraulic system.

WHISTLE NOISE FROM INTAKE MANIFOLD/THROTTLE BODY

This is a technical service bulletin for repair of this problem, it is not a recall. It covers 2001 Corvettes LS1, LS6 engines. TSB # 02-06-01-021
Some owners may comment on a whistle noise coming from either the intake manifold or the throttle body. The noise is most noticeable between 1100 and 2000 RPM.
This bulletin calls for replacing the intake manifold.

DRIVER SEAT MOVEMENT DURING ACCELERATION AND BRAKING

This is a technical service bulletin out to repair this problem, it is not a recall. It covers 1997-2002 corvettes with power seats prior to vin 25106379. TSB # 02-08-50-002
This bulletin calls for replacing both seat adjusters.

CONVERTIBLE TOP PAINT WEAR THROUGH AT FIFTH BOW

There is a new service bulletin out for this paint wear problem on 1998-2001 C5 convertibles. TSB # 02-08-111-001
This is for cars that have paint around the tonneau cover at the 5th bow wearing through.
The correction is to replace the 5th bow seal.
THIS IS NOT A RECALL but a how to repair the problem for service departments. If your car is still under warranty, I would call this to your dealer’s attention. If you are out of warranty and want the repair, contact me at corvetteparts@hotmail.com or call me at
406-628-4618 and I can get you the repair info and part.

WATER LEAK PROBLEMS-REPAIRS

GM has released a new 9- page service bulletin dealing with probable causes and the repair for multiple water leak areas on the C5. TSB #02-08-57-003 dated May 2002. If you are having a problem with yours and is under warranty contact your dealer and have them refer to this bulletin. If you are out of warranty give me a call at 406-628-4618 and I can go over your individual problem with you. This is too detailed to handle in an email.

STEERING COLUMN LOCK UP

Steering column may refuse to operate, DIC service message displayed. TSB # 01-02-35-008 refers to update column lock wiring, install revised relay and/or replace electronic column lock. This was a problem on all 1997 and certain 1998-2000 C5's. Depending on the year and if manual or automatic trans.; parts cost range from wholesale price of 95.00 to 130.00. If you have this problem and the car is still under warranty take it to your dealer and have them refer to this bulletin. If not I can provide you the parts. Warranty labor time is about 1 hour to repair.

NOTE: THERE IS NOW A RECALL ON THE STEERING COLUMN LOCK: GM is issuing the recall on all c5's with the automatic trans. only at this time. The notices will go out in stages starting with model year 1997. This is due to availability of parts. All notices should be mailed to owners of all affected years by late summer of 04 GM says. If you are having a problem I would definitely contact your dealer even if you have not received a notice. As of this time GM is not planning on recalling the 6 speed cars. If you have any specific questions I suggest you contact Chevrolet Customer Assistance at 1-800-222-1020.

PREMATURE WEAR OF LEATHER MATERIAL ON BUCKET SEATBACK BOLSTER

1997-1999 Corvette built prior to VIN breakpoint X5116322
This is a repair under warranty only, and calls for replacement of the seat cover assembly.

TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR SYSTEM UPDATE

This is from a GM Tech Link Bulletin
Components: There is a separate sensor/transmitter in each wheel. The TPM (tire pressure monitor) system shares the receiver with the keyless entry system. Data from the receiver is displayed on the instrument panel, using the driver information center (DIC).
Sensors: The sensor, with built-in valve stem, is inserted from the inside of the wheel, through a hole in the rim. It is retained by a nut (4 n.m, 35 lb. In.) and is sealed by a grommet. A lithium battery with a design life of 10 years powers the sensor. Each sensor is coded differently. This permits the receiver to determine exactly which tire is over or under inflated.
Operation: The sensors operate only above 20 mph (32 kph) and transmit once per hour when parked, to preserve battery power. If the pressure in a tire rises or falls outside the calibration limits, the condition is displayed by the DIC. The low limit is 24 psi (168 kPa) and the upper limit is 39 psi (272 kPa).
Service: The sensors are lightweight, only about an ounce (28 g), and this small weight is easily accounted for during normal tire balancing. The sensors are mounted within the well of the rim. It’s important to be careful when using a tire-mounting machine. The sensor could be damaged in two ways: either by direct contact with the machinery or by the bead of the tire as it is forced over the rim. The valve stem cap is made of aluminum and the valve core is nickel-plated to resist corrosion. The end of the stem serves as the sensor’s antenna.
Tip: Do not replace either the cap or the valve with standard parts. This will interfere with the sensor’s ability to transmit. The TPM sensor is more precise than consumer-grade tire pressure gauges. It may be necessary to explain this if the customer routinely mis-inflates tires using a gas station gauge.
Receiver Programming: The receiver is programmed at the factory to recognize which sensor is at each wheel location. If tires are rotated or a sensor is replaced, the receiver must be reprogrammed, following SI procedures. If the receiver is not reprogrammed, the system will continue to report the correct pressures, but will assign them to the wrong locations on the vehicle.
Tip: There are two reprogramming methods. You must use the J-41760 Kent Moore magnet when a new sensor is installed. During tire rotation, you can use either the magnet or your Tech 2.
Magnet Method: You will have only one minute between horn chirps, and five minutes overall, to complete the procedure once you start. With ignition on, engine not running, press both lock and unlock buttons on the key fob. A horn chirp within 10 seconds indicates that the receiver is in programming mode. At each wheel, hold the J-41760 magnet over the valve stem until the horn chirps, to force the sensor to transmit its code. You MUST follow this order: LF, RF, RR, and LR. The horn chirps twice to indicate completion. Scroll through the DIC readout to verify all four pressures are displayed.
Tech 2 Method: With the TPM reprogramming procedure on your Tech 2, you can command each sensor to its new location. As long as no new sensors are being installed, the magnet is not needed. Scroll through the DIC readout to verify all four pressures are displayed.
NOTE: If you are wanting your own special magnet give Fichtner Chevrolet a call at 800-234-5284 or email at parts@fichtnerchevrolet.com to check on current price and avail.

MAGNETIC SELECTIVE RIDE CONTROL

If your 2003 corvette has magnetic selective ride control (RPO F55) and seems to have a stiff ride check this. This is new vehicle prep bulletin. When the ignition is turned off, the dampers offer very little damping. So, plastic stuffers are inserted in the dampers for shipping from the factory. The stuffers are to be removed during new vehicle prep. Failure to do so will result in customer dissatisfaction with the vehicle’s ride quality. See bulletin 02-03-11-002 for complete details. You can recognize the presence of Ride Control three ways: Ride control button on console, Corrugated dust boots on dampers, Yellow tabs protruding from dust boots. To remove the stuffers, lift the vehicle to allow the wheels to hang free. Reach from below, behind the tire. Compress the dust boot and pull the yellow tab to remove the stuffer. There is a stuffer on each damper, front and rear. After removing the stuffer, be sure to pull the dust boot down to cover the upper end of the damper tube.

D: SPECIALTY PARTS AND PART TECHNICAL INFORMATION

GM in their great wisdom is doing another design change on the (AQ9) sport style seat covers. Up till now you could get the outer bolster and insert as separate pieces for the seat back covers. Someone determined the zipper system was not satisfactory and has redesigned it, and you now get the bolster and insert together as a matched set. They also said the new zipper is not compatible with the old zipper system. Basically this eliminates you from being able to two tone your seats as we could before. I had a polite but firm temper tantrum with them about this, but they are also drastically changing the prices. Some are doubling, some by 50 %. It is not consistent, and pricing is looking into the matter. Until this matter is resolved pricing, availability and application will probably change on a daily basis. CALL if you want to make a seat cover change, so we can get the latest info and prices for you. 406-628-4121

COLOR MATCH ON CARGO COVER LIDS

Some people have commented that the rear cargo covers are not an exact match to their
Interior color; mostly on the black. I have visited with GM and they say it is due mostly to slight variances in dye lots, and is not a defect in any way. They also said the direction of the carpet nap will make the color change slightly.
