Wow! Tony Kanaan & Marco Andretti Enter Petit Le Mans

On the heels of its first overall victory in the American Le Mans Series - and second in LMP2 - Andretti Green Racing will enter Franck Montagny, and Indy Car Series stars Marco Andretti and Tony Kanaan in its Acura ARX-01b for Petit Le Mans Powered By The Totally New Mazda6. The 11th annual 1,000-mile/10-hour race is scheduled for October 4 at Road Atlanta.

Kanaan also will join Montagny for the final race of the season, the Monterey Sports Car Championships at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

“We’re happy with the lineups we’ve set for these last two events,” said team co-owner Michael Andretti. “Franck, Tony and Marco are going to be very compatible teammates and should work very well together. They all give very good feedback and know what we need out of the XM Radio Acura to stay up front. Winning at Detroit was something we felt was long overdue for us. Now we need to capitalize on that momentum and finish out the 2008 season as strong as possible.”

Marco Andretti, grandson of multi-time Sebring winner and a former F1 World Champion Mario Andretti, will make his third start of the season in the American Le Mans Series. He debuted at Sebring where the team was forced to retire early due to a mechanical issue.

His second start came with Montagny at Lime Rock as part of a doubleheader weekend for Andretti, who also drove in the IndyCar Series race at Nashville Superspeedway after completing his stint in the car at Lime Rock Park. He and Montagny placed sixth overall and fifth in P2 after starting 24th.

Petit Le Mans will mark Kanaan’s first start for Andretti Green in the 2008 American Le Mans Series. Kanaan, a 13-time winner in IndyCar and its 2004 champion, was part of the AGR lineup that captured the LMP2 victory in the team’s debut at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

Kanaan was slated to drive at Petit Le Mans last season. A punctured radiator sidelined the AGR entry early and prevented Kanaan from making an appearance in the race. He finished fourth in P2 and sixth overall with Bryan Herta in last year’s four-hour season finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Montagny joined Andretti Green Racing mid-season as the primary driver for its American Le Mans Series entry. A veteran of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and former F1 test driver, he partnered with James Rossiter for the team’s first win of the season in LMP2 and overall at the Detroit Sports Car Challenge presented by Bosch at the Raceway at Belle Isle.

Pit Stop Demo Tuesday Sept. 30 at Atlantic Station

Cars will be on display in front of the Fox Sports Grill starting at Noon, and a real pit stop demonstration will be staged by one of the American Le Mans Series teams entered in Petit Le Mans sometime between 5:30 and 6:30 pm.

Then from 7-9 pm Mike Bell’s popular motorsports show, Speed Zone, will be broadcast live from Fox Sports Grill. The show will be dedicated to Petit Le Mans and six or more American Le Mans Series and SCCA Speed World Challenge drivers will be interviewed, and then be available for autographs.

Default Finally... SPEED To Air Petit!

SPEED To Air Petit Le Mans Preview Live From Road Atlanta On Oct. 2

Petit Le Mans powered by the Totally New MAZDA6 will see unprecedented coverage next week with SPEED providing three-day coverage from Road Atlanta. On the schedule is a one-hour preview special Thursday night with Friday's qualifying shown online and the race broadcast live on Saturday.

Similar to this year’s coverage from the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring in March, SPEED will host a Petit Le Mans special starting at 7 p.m. ET Thursday, October 2. The show will originate pit side, previewing the race and providing a taste of on-track activity and off-track reaction as the race’s night practice session unfolds. Then, on Oct. 3, qualifying will be streamed live by americanlemans.com and SPEEDtv.com starting at 3:25 p.m. ET.

On October 4, six-and-a-half total hours of race coverage from the penultimate event of the 2008 American Le Mans Series season starts at 11 a.m. ET with the green flag of the 1,000-mile sports car classic at 11:15 a.m.

Long time sports car play-by-play announcer Leigh Diffey will anchor this year’s coverage, as 1989 Trans-Am Series Champion Dorsey Schroeder and road racing veteran Calvin Fish provide color commentary from the booth. On pit road, former racers Brian Till and Chris Neville are set to be joined by sports car insider Jamie Howe to cover the many storylines throughout the weekend.

This will be the network’s 10th year of broadcast coverage from the race’s 11 years of existence.

“The Petit Le Mans special will celebrate the first 10 years of this great endurance race,” said Rick Miner, SPEED Senior VP of Studio Production & Operations. “The show will also preview that Saturday’s race, especially with the great background of night practice where we’ll be able to interview drivers and get the impressions immediately after they leave the track.”

This year’s Petit Le Mans Powered By The Totally New Mazda6 is stacked with star power, both in the driver’s seat and on track. Like Sebring and Le Mans earlier this year, Peugeot Sport will re-engage its LMP1 battle with the dominant Audi factory team when they offload a diesel-powered Peugeot 908i racer stateside for the second time this season. Highlighting the Peugeot driving lineup will be former Formula One shoes Christian Klien and Stephane Sarrazin; both competed at Le Mans this past June. Among the other drivers competing in Petit Le Mans this year will be open-wheel stars Helio Castroneves, Ryan Briscoe, Tony Kanaan, Scott Dixon, Marco Andretti and Dario Franchitti, along with Series regulars such as Marco Werner, Lucas Luhr, Gil de Ferran, David Brabham, Johnny O'Connell and many others.

I talked with a friend of ours today that works @ Katech, and there is going to be some cool stuff in Johnny's auction on Friday evening. One item is an autographed carbon fiber valve cover off a C6R 7.0 liter. This will be the first time that any of the valve covers have been allowed to be sold to the public. I know I would like to have it. See ya there.

Default Petit le mans pre-race notebook

PETIT LE MANS PRE-RACE NOTEBOOK

The entry list for Petit Le Mans powered by the Totally New MAZDA6 continues to take shape with several teams adding drivers to their lineups for the annual 1,000-mile/10-hour endurance classic at Road Atlanta. The American Le Mans Series’ founding event gets the green flag at 11:15 a.m. ET on Saturday, October 4.

In GT2, Flying Lizard Motorsports firmed up its lineup by reuniting Porsche factory driver Marc Lieb with fellow works pilots Jörg Bergmeister and Wolf Henzler in the No. 45 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. The trio won in class at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring this year. Bergmeister and Henzler can wrap up the driver’s championship next week, as can Flying Lizard in the team standings.

Johannes van Overbeek and Patrick Pilet will drive the No. 46 entry. Seth Neiman, Darren Law and Lonnie Pechnik are teaming in the No. 44 Porsche.

LG BACK ON THE GRID: Lou Gigliotti will bring his Riley Technologies-built Corvette C6 back to GT2 at Road Atlanta and team with Tomy Drissi, who will drive in GT2 for the first time in his American Le Mans Series career.

Gigliotti raced the Corvette for the first four rounds of the Series, teaming with Doug Stevens. The pairing added Marc Goossens for Sebring, and the Riley factory driver could end up as the team’s third driver at Road Atlanta next week.

The Corvette ran as high as third in class at Miller Motorsports Park in May before finishing sixth.

WATTS, PLA IN GINETTA-ZYTEK: Frenchman Olivier Pla, a two-time winner in GP2, will team with Danny Watts in Team LNT’s new Ginetta-Zytek LMP1 entry. Pla made the transition to sports cars this year and placed fourth in LMP2 with ASM-Quifel Racing at the 24 Hours Le Mans; one of his teammates was Dyson Racing’s Guy Smith.

Pla also finished third in P2 at the Le Mans Series’ season-ending race at Silverstone two weeks ago, where he showed blistering pace particularly during a triple stint behind the wheel.

A LOLA FOR AUTOCON: When Autocon Motorsports rolls out of the pits for the first practice at upcoming Petit Le Mans, it will be in a Lola-AER the team recently acquired from Chamberlain-Synergy Racing, rather than the Creation CA06H-Judd that it campaigned since the Utah Grand Prix last season.

The Lola is the fourth different car Autocon has run in the American Le Mans Series since its inaugural series entry of the a Riley & Scott MXIII at Petit Le Mans in 2004. In 2006 and part of 2007, Autocon ran an ex-Dyson Racing Lola EX257, and produced its best performances in that car including leading overall at Lime Rock, and finishing second and third in team points in consecutive years in the P1 class.

The car is outfitted with an AER twin turbo V8 engine, which Autocon will run at Petit Le Mans and the Monterey Sports Car Championship incorporating cellulosic E85R ethanol racing fuel, before deciding on its 2009 power plans.

Chris McMurry, Tony Burgess and Bryan Willman will race the Lola in its first American Le Mans Series start.

Had a FANTASTIC time at PLM!

Congrats to Badboyvettes for their outstanding performance. If you've never heard the C6R roaring V8 sound, your missing out, big time!

One of the highlights for the weekend was the flag raising in the Corvette Corral before the start of the race. A group of approximately 20 National Guard returnees from the war unfolded and raised an American flag in precise military order. Everyone present was deeply moved by the ceremony. Being a Vietnam vet, I personally thanked several of the soldiers for their service and dedication to this great country of ours.

After the ceremony, Georgia National Guard soldiers were asked to select one Corvette in the corral for their "Top Celebrity Choice Award."

Yours truly was surprised and honored to be that owner.

Default Petit Le Mans

I am glad to hear you enjoyed having the flag raising in the Corvette corral. Maybe that is something we can put together again for future.

Tell me your thoughts on where the corral is located, what you thought of the race, what you would like to see in the future at Petit.

I brought out my 7 year old son, and we parked in the corral on Thursday. Everyone was extremely nice and helpful, and he had a weekend he wont ever forget. Thanks to all the volunteers in the corral.
