Default Cruise-In XIII Planning: Members let your voices be heard!!!

Corvetteforum Cruise-Ins started in 2000 as a means to meet in person the fellow Corvette enthusiasts we had met online. We took our Corvettes to Beech Bend to run them on the drag strip and, after the first few years, for AutoXing and burnout contests.

We had a lot of fun, enjoyed plenty of good cooking from Roscoe and his crew and in the process raised some money for the NCM and St. Jude.
In later years, we lost our access to Beech Bend and AutoXing had to be scheduled on weekdays, rather than the weekend. The CI agenda became routine. Roscoe had personal conflicts that prevented him from cooking and maintaining the beer trailer. We weren’t able to get participation from GM executives in Detroit. The economy took a nose dive. Gas prices soared. Etc., etc.

The result has been diminishing attendance at CI events the past couple of years during a time when the workload of the NCM’s events staff has increased to the point they are no longer able to be the planners and coordinators of the event.

The future model, it appears, will be that the NCM wants groups such as Corvetteforum to take responsibility for their own agendas. They’ve even suggested that rotating our event to other locations around the country might be desirable.

That being the case, we have a blank canvas in planning for future.

First, do you want to have a Cruise-In XIII and, if so, when and where do you want to have it? Some of you have complained in the past that Memorial Day weekend gets in the way of your family plans or that your Memorial Day weekend is Saturday through Monday, not Thursday through Saturday. Others have suggested that Bowling Green is too far for them to travel.

Some have expressed disappointment in not being able to race their Corvettes as a part of the Cruise-In event? So do you want to try a date and/or a place where a track would be available to us?

Again, it’s a blank canvas, so let us know what you would like to do, when you want to do it and where you want to do it.

Well as a relative noob to CI, I'll say that it is hard to imagine CI not in Bowling Green. Since we have been to only three to date, there is still a lot of things to see and do in and around BG. I suppose it is a question about whether CI is more about the forum or the corvette/museum, for us it is more about the corvette/museum, so BG is the place to be.

The time of year is not that important to us, as it is a few days off work either way. The holiday weekend is actually a nice time to have it as we can return home on Sunday and still have Monday to relax and get ready to return to work on Tuesday. Coming from the north, it is almost always a chance to find some slightly warmer weather for a few days.

We have really enjoyed going to CI with each year being a great time, even with less people. We'd love to see attendance like our first year (CI 10) or even more as the stories of the earlier years really sound like they were the ones to be at. So we are open for options, but are definitely interested in a CI 13, whereever and whenever.

First, do you want to have a Cruise-In XIII: YES DEFINITELY

If so, when and where do you want to have it?
I for one, would like to see the event jump around to wherever the interest is highest for that particular year. A poll of available areas might be a good way to determine this. This way everybody can experience the corvetteforum cruise-in at some point. Having it in Bowling Green at the NCM has been great and I think works out very well, but am fearing this has fallen into a slump. A change in scenery/location might be a big help to re-spark this once great event.

Some of you have complained in the past that Memorial Day weekend gets in the way of your family plans or that your Memorial Day weekend is Saturday through Monday, not Thursday through Saturday. Others have suggested that Bowling Green is too far for them to travel.
I couldn't agree more with this. I would like to see the date changed to something other then on a major holiday weekend. My suggestions...Early June, Early August or Early September.

Some have expressed disappointment in not being able to race their Corvettes as a part of the Cruise-In event? So do you want to try a date and/or a place where a track would be available to us? I think that would be an excellent idea to TRY for; BUT that should not be a limiting factor, should a track not be available in a particular area that sparks a lot of interest from members that would want to attend and have the function be near them.

Again, it’s a blank canvas, so let us know what you would like to do, when you want to do it and where you want to do it.
I think that some key contributions could really help this function...

1) Public Relations...we need to get the word out that these changes have gone into effect...The sticky is great and all but very easily overlooked. I think the best way would be for Internet Brands to send out a mass corvetteforum member's email blast! This should not take long at all to do. Have it explain basically everything you have mentioned in the sticky but dress it up a little bit. It should exciting to get members attention!

2) Once the spark has been lit, the forum needs to follow up consistently each month asking for help and recommendations of what members can do to make the event the best ever. Right up to the event date!

3) Members who would like to participate in food services (such as Roscoe) or any other area should step forward and make it known they wish to partake in the activity.

4) I think that sometimes it is the small & cheap things that members can do that would go over the best! How about a bunch of members who know a thing about the Corvettes step forward and have a few small question and answer seminars...such as:

A) Modifying your Corvette: what it really costs? What is involved? What is the experience level required?

B) Proper Car Care for your Corvette: the Do's and Dont's for washing your car.

C) Your car has X amount of mileage: what should you be doing to it as preventative maintenance?

D) Support your CorvetteForum Vendors...list the top 10 selling vendors on the forum at the time of the Cruise In and have a special "Corvetteforum Cruise In Attendees Only" discount code for web orders or the discount will apply in person if the vendor attends the Cruise In.

E) Special CorvetteForum Cruise In Vendor Tune Special: if enough people would pre-register to have their car tuned and a vendor would step up to attend the Cruise In...this could be a win win for both vendor and members. Chuck Cow did this is the past and it went over well.

5) How about bringing back the "Go-Karts"...if we could all act responsibly and plan for a few hours there are always lots of areas that have tracks.

6) The Quicky Car Show...how about a car show for a few hours say 10-1. We all like to attend or walk through these, but some people just hate that these take up 3/4 of your day. If more volunteer judges were available it could make the choosing winners process be more efficient and fast.

7) Regional Caravan Captains...once upon a time this was possible and happened. I would be curious if enough interest was out there that people in certain areas would step forward to orchestrate a Caravan to the Cruise In destination.

8) Sponsorships, raffles, prizes, donations, hotel participation discounts, special interests, all should be considered. When members step up and say....hey we could all meet on my 10 acre property and have a luncheon or I have access to get us a discount on a track...these should be investigated further. There are so many members that donations, recommendations, tips, could come fairly easily...just have to get the word out for what is needed. Case in point...I have not read a post yet on the forum where somebody was needing either some local help, or recommendation for a good place to eat, or even a ride somewhere that didn't receive it. Have the forum ask for the members to give back a little...I am sure there are plenty of us that will.

Just some ideas...I would love to know more specifics as to with a clean slate...what does this actually mean...who is technically in charge over the function...is it Internet Brands or is there a CF committee?

As I have mentioned plenty of times before... I would very much like to see the Cruise In stay alive.

Thanks to everybody who has played a part in the Cruise In for the last 12 years and I hope you all chime in to keep this great event going!!!

I'll throw in my 2 cents. I agree with everything that you've said. Even events like Bloomington Gold, MidAmerica Vettefest, etc. have become 'same old'. Just as a suggestion, would it be possible to do something relatively centralized, like Chicagoland Raceway, with a large city available for extra-curricular activities? Also possibilities would be Indy, Road America or possibly something in the St. Louis area (home of the early Vettes). CI is fun and racing and autocross make it even more so. Some place to run at speed legally would be fun too. I hope that there are many others who respond with thoughts and ideas and that the event can be kept alive. I do agree that Memorial Day weeked is difficult to attend. Maybe a non-holiday weekend would work better. Thanks for all of the great work in the past and I look forward to future events. Zuti

I never attended a CI for the reason to compete. There's plenty of tracks in my area; don't need/want to travel and lug spare wheels...
All I was wanting to place faces with forum names, and shake hands.

And with the earlier CI's , not only got to meet forum members; but the forum owner and the moderators. But that seesm to no longer happen

We didn't need the NCM to mention this to a lot of us; been suggesting for years that cruise-ins should move geographically.

I agree with Mike...definitely need a "Meet and Greet" function. This would be an excellent way to get the backbone of the new CorvetteForum (since IB took over) to meet the members that keep them in business. I know everybody can't attend, but for the numbers of administrators, IB staff, vendors, and moderators.... surely the numbers can be improved upon.

I really wanted to attend aat least one CI, but over the past couple of years attendance and interest has waned (SP?) so much that I lsot interest. Well, add the fact that people I interacted with most on the forum are no longer participants and one can see why I chose not to make the 15+ hour drive.

Say whatever you want about my post, censor it, ban me, whatever... but if I can't hang out and have a good time with my friends I'm simply not going to waste the time and money.

Hey, Preston. Got a PM from one person who suggested we think about doing an event in MI and tour the GM Heritage Museum, visit GM Hq., and the Pratt-Miller shops. As to whether CI is about Forum members or the NCM, it historically has been both. While I see some advantage in rotating the event to other locations for the sake of variety and convenience to those who have not been able to come to BG, I can't imagine that we wouldn't want to return to BG and the NCM as a destination in the future.

Thanks for the suggestions and your enthusiasm about future CIs, Jeff. Technically, I suppose, you could say that nobody has been "in charge" of the Forum's Cruise-Ins.

The folks at the NCM have set the agenda, done the coordinating and handled the registration. Roscoe collected the money for the victuals and libations. He and his crew did all of the cooking and serving.

So, going forward, we'll need Forum members to help make it happen.

Got your PM, Tim, and responded. While the percentage of people who have participated in racing at the early Cruise-Ins was limited, it always drew a pretty good crowd of people who wanted to watch and cheer one Forum member or another in friendly "grudge" matches.

I've invited IB to send a representative each year, and will continue to do so. I think money has been tight for a lot of us the past several years.

No need crying over spilt milk. Sorry it didn't work for you to come in previous years. My experience has been that I've met some new friends at each CI I've attended.

In all honesty, I'm not crying over spilled milk here, but merely stating the facts about why I chose not to attend, though I wish I could have. I really wish i could have attended in 2009, but the event took place a few weeks before I redeployed. I absolutely wanted to show up and give out hand shakes to all who helped support my Brigade via care packages and words of encouragement.

Unfortunately, there are those who share my current sentiments, and no, I'm not talking about people banished to other areas of the internet. They wouldn't come out for other reasons that we need not get into.

enough about this.... on to the topic at hand.

I really enjoyed the CI's I attended in the past. While it was nice to be so close to the museum and track that was not what brought me there. I made the trip to meet and spend time with other forum members from all over. The Mem. weekend worked great for me but I can get away pretty much anytime.

My suggestion for location would be the Pigeon Forge Gatlinburg area they have everything you could ask for. Lots of lodging, great roads to drive,
( the dragon ), shopping for the ladies, casino in nearby Cherokee, not to mention the Great Smoky mountains. The area hosts many car and motorcycle events every year including Corvette expo twice a year one in the spring and one in the fall.

Would love to see the Cruise in be brought to what it once was

I seem to recall that Vettes in the Valley is Memorial Day weekend. Is that correct?

If we decided to do that, should we try to schedule at the same time as the Woodward Dream Cruise or avoid that event because it's so crowded?

I vote for Warren MI, Home of the GM Tech Center. You're within 20-30 min drive to the various locations - Pratt/miller, Wixom build center, GM heritage museum, GM HQ at the Ren Cen downtown on the riverfront, The infamous Woodward Ave, Henry Ford Museum, Chrysler Museum, Lots of restaurants and lodging in the area to accomodate. Schedule it the weekend after memorial day, and weather should be nice!

If this gets moved to anywhere near Detroit, will registration include a free box of ammo?

I'd consider attending if this wasn't held on Mem. Day weekend as i have other plans for that weekend at ths time. there are some peeps I'd love to meet and have a beer with.

does anybody have any info on when the new track in Austin will be built?

And with the earlier CI's , not only got to meet forum members; but the forum owner and the moderators. But that seesm to no longer happen
The main reason I attend the cruise-in every year is to meet and greet. I enjoy the fellowship and seeing all of the Vettes (of course!).

Would love to see the Cruise in be brought to what it once was
Heck...I'm sleeping at the wheel again...That's a hour away from where I live and that location never entered my mind. Good one!

I'll hook you up with some ammo DJ...I always have extra!

Great suggestions everyone! Keep 'em coming!

I agree w/below.

Take a poll of most popular location. I for one, depending on time of year (ie summer) would like it to be where its not so friggin HOT. Texas OUT of question. Im sick of hot weather. I want to go someplace thats more even. Four seasons, not hot and warm.

Maybe Colorado. Or someplace central to majority of travelers.

Then. It would need to have events with Vettes. Texas would be ok as long as its not summer time. Texas motor Speedway, texas mile, waco dragstrip, anyway, there are butt loads of tracks in this state, public and private.

Lets take a poll.....

QUOTE=XtremeVette;1578419001]First, do you want to have a Cruise-In XIII: YES DEFINITELY

While I see some advantage in rotating the event to other locations for the sake of variety and convenience to those who have not been able to come to BG, I can't imagine that we wouldn't want to return to BG and the NCM as a destination in the future.

MI can be fun in the summer for certain - not including the roads . If it is timed correclty, there would be options for baseball games, concerts (lots of venues - several concerts a week in the summer), gambling, museums, cruise nights, etc. Windsor is just a short drive across the bridge and they have great summer activities also.

That is a great idea, it really covers a lot of interests - cars, shopping, nature, etc. I know my wife is always looking for what "non-car" events are being offered.
