To the untrained eye, or uninformed observer it might appear that one driver or car is spanking the other, when in reality we're trading places for 5-6 laps and comparing notes and video tapes/track data in an effort to get faster in a particular turn. So what you're seeing is actually predetermined lead/follow, stick around Steve, there's more to learn.
