Went to ESP today to get some work done. Saw a sign that said " no cash after 28 Oct"....the sign was referring to the toll booth.

I asked the tollman..."the tolls are free after 28 Oct ?"....he said "no" ; that you will need an eZ-pass; they won't take cash money. I said " what if I don't have an eZ-pass...it's free?

He said no.....they will photo your licence and send you a bill with a 5 dollar surcharge.

Just thought I'd pass this along.

We have had similar EZ pass only exits here in the Garden State (yeah, right?) for some time now, and as of November 1st will have another 23 cents per gallon of gas taxes added at the pump.

I ran across the same thing going over the Tappen Zee Bridge , NY. in May and June. The sign said "don't stop they will bill me". The bill finally came this week, after 5 months, for two crossing at $5 each and a nice picture of the vette and the PA.. license plate. We are being forced into getting an e-z pass wether we want one or not ! I'd only use it maybe 2-3 times a year but they get $75 to play with.

If you know NJ well enough there are several places I go where you can get on and off without going through a toll booth and circumvent paying. As far as the photo plate billing, at least in Florida and NY where I've encountered that, they didn't charge extra for using the service. It figures Mass. would.

I don't have front plates ( although the law says I should)

They better have camera's that take pictures of the ***-end of the car....(they probably do.)

The picture they sent me was of the back of the car. Pa. does not have front plates. The NY. ez pass web site does show cameras mounted to take shots of both the front and rear of the car.
The bill was for $5 / crossing which, I believe is the std. cash price. So NY. did not charge extra for the billing but the bridge was under construction so , I have no idea what they plan for in the future.

I wonder what their plan B is if you have no plates on the front or the rear. How they ID you. There must be a point where they make a business decision.

Why don't you guys just get an EZ Pass and not speculate about whether the front or the rear plate is photographed?? The EZ Pass is free. End of story.

In FLA and NY they photo your rear plate. On one of my cars I have a license plate cover that makes it look like it is louvered, it's hard to read unless you're directly behind it. On the Tappan Zee it was photoed and we got the ticket.

How about that...I guess every state could have different criteria. Here in **** Jersey you pay $10 for each transponder received, and a clerical fee of $1 a month in an administration fee. You get the $10 per transponder when returned. We have the Sun Pass for Florida that has no administration fee, and has way lower tolls (go figure). Both Corvettes are in Florida now (returned the EZ Passes) with the two daily drivers next to go, then we're free from EZ Pass forever.

I never had to pay for a transponder (unless you loose it), and that $1 fee they added later was BS. I think other states do not have that fee and you can get one from them.

I live in Mass, I use the NH tolls more than the Mass tolls. So I got a NH ez pass. I actually pay less for each toll than using a MA ez pass. Go figure. I just wish the Masspike would spe the money on the roads. 90 is a horri le road for ruts and potholes. I usually go cruise the southern NH backroads and they are smooth as butter.
