SEMA 2007: Jay Leno's 600 HP E85-Powered Corvette C6RS Revealed Before SEMA Debut
Nice...
http://jalopnik.com/cars/sema/sema-2...but-316031.php
A quick snippet:
Jay Leno apparently was unwilling to wait for the new 2009 Corvette ZR1 and decided he needed to get his 600-HP swerve on a wee bit early. The humongously chinned one worked with the C6.R-builders at Pratt & Miller to design this -- a C6RS -- a Corvette inspired by both the Corvette Z06 as well as the racetrack-ready C6.R. To all this, Leno added his own little touch of corniness -- the ability to run it on the ethanol-blended E85. Leno's alternative-fuel supercar is powered by a custom and giant 8.2-liter (500 cubic-inch) all-aluminum small-block V8 that pumps out approximately 600 horses and 585 lb-ft of torque. On the outside, the wider front and rear fenders and a wider rear fascia with an integrated spoiler on top combine with the racing-style diffuser and the waterfall hood with venting show some clear indications of C6.R inspiration. All we know is we want to drive this more than the Leno-inspired Ecojet concept car from last year. Full press release after the jump.
Thanks,
- Eric

Cool find Eric.
You know J had to jump to the head of the line for the best American sports car of all time.
I would like to see that wider front and rear in person.
Maaaan, that car must look low, mean, and fat.
BTW, I'm jealous. I hate Leno now.

I saw it today. while I was standing next to it drooling, I turned around to see MArk from MSI doing the same thing. It really is a nice car. I took plenty of pics of it, but they look the same as the ones in the link above. I would like to see how 8.2 liters of corn burning E85 motor feels like.

I like Jay Leno, his car collection and Corvettes....but the E85 issue is a huge gimmick and that's all.
First let's start with Chevrolet's flex fuel web site: If you click the link "find a filling station near you," it steers you to the NECV (National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition) website. If you click on find a filling station in California, this is what you get:
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Berkeley, CA 94720
Private facility. No public access.
Shell Station
2741 Gateway Rd
Carlsbad, CA 92009
To open Early 2008.
Lawrence Livermore National Lab
Livermore, CA 94551
Private facility. No public access.
Vandenberg Air Force Base
1705 Air Field Rd.
Lompoc, CA 93437
805-606-6867
Private facility. No public access.
Conserv Fuel
11699 San Vicente Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90049
310-571-0039
Available December 2007.
Texaco Station
1660 Oceanside Blvd
Oceanside, CA 92054
To open Early 2008.
Sacramento Municipal Utility District
6201 S Street
Sacramento, CA 95819
Private facility. No public access.
Pearson Fuels
4067 El Cajon Blvd
San Diego, CA 92105
619-521-2469
So for now, there is one station in California that sells E85....all the way down in San Diego. I called them as I was writing this. E85 is $2.79/gallon cash or $2.86/gallon debit/credit. It says a station will open in LA in December.....but I'm not holding my breath on that.
Additionally, GM states they have sold 1.5 million flex fuel vehicles. The flex fuel option is no additional cost, but they are using the E85 compatibility as a gimmick to move units so people don't buy cars like the Toyota Prius, when in actuality, you'll never find an E85 station to put any ethanol in your car.
Now, E85 contains 45% less BTU/gallon than gas. On Chevy's website, their 211 hp 3.5L impala flex fuel vehicle gets 18 city, 29 highway on gas and only 14 city, 21 highway on E85. A stock 6.3 L 2008 vette gets 16 city, 26 highway mpg, which works out to around 18 mpg real word combined cycle driving. Jay's 8.2L 600hp Vette is going to get something like 15mpg combined city/highway on gas. That works out to 11 mpg on E85. On a 15 gallon fill up, that gives him a range of 165 miles......Just enough to drive from the E85 station in San Diego to his house in LA and back to the gas station, which makes the E85 function in the flex fuel equation useless. To me, that's just a gimmick.
Doing a little more math, flex fuel cars burn 38% more E85 than gas, so the $2.79/gallon E85 is equivalent to paying $3.85/gallon for gas. I know Jay Leno wouldn't mind, but the rest of us would.
And one last tidbit to this E85 diatribe is that PhD professors of GeoScience at UC Berkley and Cornell have published peer reviewed journals on E85 and state that the amount of fossil fuels used in the production of E85 exceeds the amount of energy you get back out of E85. In other words, ethanol is not renewable with the way we currently produce corn and we are depleting our world oil supply to make E85 while our tax dollars get eaten up in subsidies to corn farmers.

Some critics says the scientists claims are not accurate, but the critics are environmentalists, government policy makers and lobbying groups for agricultural interests, not scientists.
With that said, its a sunny day. I think I'll take my vette out for a lead-footed drive to the coast.
/rant off.

With you. Even working around GM cars and trucks all day every day, I still think it is a dumb marketing ploy. My new 2007 Z71 truck is flex fuel and I never plan on putting the corn brew in it, even if I had the chance to. It was the only one that I liked on the lot when I purchased and the E85 had nothing to do with it at all.
