Thoughts on Paul Newman RIP
Sad to hear the passing of Paul Newman. His movie "Winning" with Joanne Woodward, Robert Wagner (the bad guy) and the kid whose name I don't remember was one of my first introductions to car racing.
I remember Paul Newman (I can't call him "Paul" since I did not know him personally, nor can I address him as "Newman" since it reminds me of that comedy show) in relation to the late Larry Park. Larry Park was a Corvette enthusiast, racer and specialist Corvette shop owner. Larry was also a multiple SOLO II BP National Champion, and a sometime NASCAR, TransAm and Winston West driver. He liked to relate the story of running into the rear of Paul Newman's car in a TransAm race and getting punted off course from behind by Dale Earnhardt Sr at a Sears Point NASCAR race. Larry joked that he was the only driver who ran up Paul Newman's *** and had his own run into by Dale Sr. Paul, I hope you get even with Larry up there in a heavenly race.
I'll remember you as a racer, race team owner, actor and greatest of all as a humanitarian. Thank You

My hero. For so many reasons.
Most memorable big screen moment for me...In Cool Hand Luke.
His mom dies while he is in prison. When he was told of her passing. He walked over and picked up the banjo his mother had given him. The cell block emptied. He began slowly playing a tune on the banjo, singing sadly - "I don't care if it rains or freezes, as long as I got my plastic Jesus, sitting on the dashboard of my car..." A tear rolls down his cheek. As he starts the second verse his mind seems to become clearer, his tempo and singing more vigorous. "It comes in colors pink and pleasant, it glows in the dark cause its iradescent, I take it with me if I travel far." You sense his mind is now made up as to his only course of action...
Newman knew his actions were not always popular, and he told the New York Times Magazine in 1966, "A person without character has no enemies." Friends said he was delighted in 1973 when he was listed as No. 19 on Nixon's enemies list, claiming it elevated him in the eyes of his children.
Yes! An American hero.

Paul Newman was an amazing person. Great actor, race driver and team owner and gave milions to charity. My friend got to talk to him at a hotel in Hawaii. He said they were in a spa and just talked about everything. When my friend went to leave Paul thanked him, probably for just talking to him and not asking him for autographs, etc. Someone else I know went to work for "Newman's Own" company about 10 years ago. Paul Newman actually conducted the final interview at the CART race in Phoenix. He has told us it is a great company to work for, and they donated a lot of items to our Legion baseball team for our fund raisers. He was an special person, especially compared to the "stars" we have today.

One car that I shot a lot of, because it kept coming into the pits,
was one without the drivers name on it. I thought it was odd so I asked another photographer about it and he said did it have "PLN"
above the door I said yes, "oh that's Paul Newman".

I never met or knew him in anyway, but I was always impressed with what I saw and new of him. I was also very impressed that he and his wife were able to maintain their marriage in such a crazy business. He'll be missed.
