Default Ca DMV licensing question you might already know

I'm looking to buy a period correct set of plates for my Vette
If I'm holding the pair of plates can these be reassigned to my car?

Yes.

On second thought, it reads like it's 72 and older only.

Why wouldn't you just order new black plates? They are available at the Cal DMV as of July 1st. Either as sequential or personalized. Enjoy!

Well, considering the law for whether or not you can use a replacement par that you find is for 72 and older and he's looking for a period correct plate, odds are he is not looking for black and yellow.

I was looking forward to getting a set of period-correct blue and gold plates for the 78.

I did the YOM transfer about a year ago. You need to have a registration sticker on the rear plates that matches the year of your car. Before I purchased a set of plates from a private party, I called DMV to confirm the plates can be transferred aka CLEAR. If you don't have a correct year registration sticker, I've seen some pretty good fake ones on EBAY. In my opinion they don't care if the registration is fake. For me I used a hair dryer and pealed back bunch of numbers and carefully removed the 67 and got lucky with a 80% perfect real 66 registration sticker.

The next is a pain, you need to fill out the DMV form and wait in line stupid line. Chances of the person at DMV knowing how to process the YOM form correctly is 50/50. Going there before opening is a good idea or making an appointment. AAA doesn't do YOM processing. Be sure to download and completed before going to DMV. I had to go twice because the first time I needed to pay for my registration renewal first and then come back the next day to apply for the YOM.

They will take a copy of your plates with the correct year registration sticker. It will take about a month before you hear anything if all goes well. I had to chase down the YOM department in Sacramento for my lost application. I had to resend the forms via fax and it was processed a week later.

You will get a small silver plate to hold the current registration sticker that can be attached to one of the rear license plate frame. For me the registration plate is mounted on the lower left hole.

I'm not a fan of the new issue black plates because they are reflective and it looks pretty cool when you have a 66 registration sticker and current one on the rear plates.

The only thing I should have done was get the correct first letter to my year. I only paid about $100 for the set of plates from EBAY - Canada seller. The front are not in good condition (some rust and small dent dimples) and can be rebuilt, but the rear are in very good condition with some clear shine on the original paint. I was more interested in getting the original black plates and there was no guarantee the new black reflective plates would have the necessary minimum orders.

One of the photos in my photo gallery and member avatar has a picture of my plates with the YOM rear plates and extra registration sticker.
