Default Smogging in Nor Cal

So I would like to throw more at my 04 Zo6 but finding a smog guy that's reasonable seems unlikely. I see people here with long tubes and cams but for the life of me I cant see how they get past smog. I ran shorties and Hiflow cat mid pipe on my 04 GTO worked ok but not a long tube. Other than sweating every 2 years the only thing would be a carb exempt supercharger, But Ive seen smog guys have melt downs over those. I almost didn't pass my recent smog because my car had a K/N intake. Don't know if this is even worth responding to, Im just venting. I think my blood started boiling seeing the proposed gun law here in this wonderful state! so I went this way. Thanks

To pass I had to put back on the stock exhaust manifolds and cats. I also went to a smaller cam. Passed smog last week.

Technically that is even irrelevant now because there is no sniffer. "If" the smog guy recognizes the sound of a cam then you're required to produce a CARB # for that cam. If you can't then the car should fail. It used to be that most smog guys would rely on the sniffer if the car passed the visual, but there is no more sniffer so most smog techs are more strict with the visual and then mods.

Technically you could have a .25x/.26x cam that owuld pass smog if the guy didn't recognize the sound of the aftermarket cam

Small cam would still be mostly hard to detect, right?

Up the idle a tad.

I would think it all depends on the smog person....
Some are stricter than others .

The best option IMO is a supercharger. Smog laws are getting very strict these days and the fines against smog shops for even "missing" something is pretty severe.

I have a friend who has a smog shop and he never did illegal smogs.. he would pass you if it blew clean BUT if you had a loud lumpy cam he would tell you right off the bat to not even waste your time. A few years ago he lost one of his Smog certifications because the state disconnected EGR on a test car and he didn't catch it. Just by that small "mistake" he lost the ability to do repairs on SMOG for several years. The fines are getting very strict and many smog techs aren't going to risk their livelihood to make an extra $100.

In some extreme cases smog shop owners or tech have seen jail time because they consider it a crime against the environment.

Having an older car it still gets the sniffer. Every two years I sweat out the nox, it's always on the edge. I take it to a guy I know from my auto classes I took at Los Medanos. He lets me put the shop fan in front while he is cooling my radiator with a hose.
