Selling a car that won't pass smog
So i'm in a quandary and I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this question, but wanted to throw it out to the community.
I have a 2002 Z06 with AR Long tubes on it. I was able to get it smogged through a concerned corvette citizen...that I no longer have access to.
I'm pretty tired of the dancing around smog BS.
So my plan was put things back as they were as cheaply as possible, get it smogged, and then sell the long tubes and probably the car shortly thereafter. Then I thought...there are people out there that would probably love this car as is.
There isn't a way for me to sell a car that won't pass smog though right? Or at least I need a smog certificate stating it passed?
2002 Corvette Z06
AR Long tubes
Corsa XTreme Cat Back
Vortech CAI
23,000 miles.
Thoughts?

Easy answer is to slap the stock exhaust back on, drive it a few hundred miles to clear the monitors and then smog it. As far as I know, it's always the sellers responsibility to smog a car even if you get something in writing to the contrary. Unless the person buying it wants to make it a track car and never register it, I think you will need to smog it.
With that being said, what $ are you trying to sell it for?

The California law states that the seller is responsible for getting the car smogged before selling the car. Who would buy the car knowing it wont pass a smog? I'd put it back to stock.

I've sold cars that didn't have a smog cert. Just be upfront with the buyer that the car won't pass smog with the current bolt on's. For all we know, the buyer may have a hookup. Just lower the price a little if the buyer decides he/she will smog the car themselves.

Sell the car out of state. If you sell the car as-is make sure the buyer signs a statement stating that the car was sold as-is for parts or else the car could still come back per state law.If you want to keep the car get it to pass smog then fine a buddies house in a transfer only county to register the car at.if you want an estimate on installing the oem parts back on send me a PM.Get new o2 sensors from rock auto first.

Thanks for all the responses. I really love the car....don't have to sell it necessarily, but there are quite a few things that might be made possible by doing it. Not sure how much I would try to sell it for...needs to be smogged in about a month.
Its in perfect shape...obviously very low miles still. Only thing that shows any wear is the driver seat which shows it has at least been driven.

Sell it to a dealer. Then he can either do what it takes to get it smogged or take it to an auction. Don't expect to get much for it, but dealers buy cars that won't smog in their current condition at auctions every day.

As far as I know As-Is does not supersede California smog laws. Buyer would still have recourse if they wanted to come after you. Best to do what you have to do and get it smogged.
