Default 2005 Chevy Suburban - "Service 4wd" light is on

Is there away to identify the service code without going to the dealer? If yes, how?

Also, does anyone have the codes to identify if the problem is the dash board switch, 4wd Actuator, the transfer case motor or something else?

Thanks,
Rod

Replace the 4wd switch on the dash, 5 minute job. The dealer will have one in stock or maybe RockAuto. Very common problem...

Start here, get the code, have them reset it while you find out what it means.

My light has been on for a few days, won't go into 4wd and now it automatically shuts off my traction control. Love that posi-traction rearend in the snow.......reminds me of learning to drive with dads car back when there were only rear wheel drive cars

Push the buttons a few times and turn the truck off and then turn it on again and see if the 2wd light is on. I always know when mine isnt working cause the light is out. I suggested that cause before I knew what was going on I tried pushing the buttons.

Not all of them will. Some towns have passed ordinances barring free code readings because local mechanics charged a $50 diagnosis fee to do the same thing and they got pissed at losing business.

My guess is RainDelay nailed it. When I took my 2003 in (after 3 tries) for the same problem it was finally the 4wd module being replaced that cured it. Somewhere on the Avalanche forum there's a thread that touched on this. Mine went into 4wd and wouldn't come out - no fun on dry pavement.

That's the reason why some part stores will let you "borrow" the code reader, so they aren't liable. I just had to go through the same thing on my brother's 03, hopefully it's just a switch, his transfer case had a hole in it.

Sometimes you can take the dash switch apart, clean it up inside and get it working again. If your a tinkerer, take the switch apart and see what you find. If not, stop by a parts store and get the codes.
