Default [paint] So when did matte become the new black?

More high-end cars are coming out with matte finishes available, and not just your matte "stealth fighter" black that's been all the rage for the past couple of years.

BMW's new "Frozen Gray Metallic" looks pretty cool. $5000 option in limited quantities.

Pretty soon we'll have matte reds, blues, etc. and those would look pretty cool, like satin.

If it's not shiny, I don't like it.

To be "hip," I will scour my black Z06 with a Brillo pad.

As an option from the factory, it's a pretty cool idea. Better than after market.

I'm not really a big fan of it. The only time I've seen it were it works is in old hot rods...and not even always then.

Just like the color-shifting pearls...They've figured out how to make a matte clear coat, so everybody's getting on the bandwagon and spending big money on it. It'll be new, cool, and different, then popular, then too popular, then yesterday's news. In 15 years, they'll be generally forgotten. In 40 years, they'll command a 25% premium at auction.

It looks ok to me. I don't know why it costs extra though. Seems like it should cost less, seeing as how they are saving money by not spraying on any of the gloss layers...

I like it. It depends a lot on the finish. Some can look like it's just primer and others look fantastic. I like BMW, although I'd prefer a slightly darker shade. Something like the spiral gray (I think that's what it's called) on the Vette.

It looks pretty cool for now but has strong getting played out potential.

Was it primer or sealer?

Looks like it was "done" in a trailer park.
