Default Door chime problem

My door chime started buzzing; I disconnected the transformer wire to stop it temporarily. Installed a new transformer and chime unit. No more buzzing, the back door chime works fine (1 chime), but the front door chime dings once followed by a dull noise. Like "ding-clunk".

I see a piece of foam glued on the chime unit for one chime. Instructions don't mention the foam so I assume it's to keep the back door from chiming twice. BTW the chime came as a unit, so the transformer is matching. What's the problem?

Either there is a chime bar (tone bar) missing, blocked, or misaligned for the front door solenoid. Or, the spring that is designed to make it kick back to hit the second plate could be missing or broken.

Open it up and have someone operate it while you watch the chime and its solenoids.

Replace the whole damn thing with a battery powered wireless unit. Problem solved.

That's twice now, I've heard it.

It seems to be getting louder.

The rubber grommets on my door bell chime bars appeared to have dry rotted, so my doorbell sounded like crap. I bought one of the units that plays songs--over 100 available for selection.

What's funny is my dogs would run to the front door and bark any time the bell was rung. My new door bell now plays the Star Spangled Banner. They have yet to figure out that it's the doorbell!

Funny how they don't make shet like they used to. My Mom's doorbell transformer (NuTone) is 48-years-old and it still works.

In fact, the only service to the entire unit has been to replace the doorbell switches because the light bulbs blew out. And I believe the O.E.M. lights lasted more than a decade before they went ****-up.

Our transformer (Heath, made in China) has already died once and it's less than four years old. I've also replaced the doorbell switch three times in as many years due to bulbs that keep blowing out.

That explains it. Do they also look at you with disdain?

One of the advantages of being an EE, I have replaced the lights in my doorbell switches twice! I've lived in this house for 44 years, boy those lights work for a long time! I'm impressed.

No such thing as dry rot. Things that rot do so when wet, never dry. Your rubber grommets didn't rot, they dried out.
