Default Can you hear a bullet......

I've been shooting and into guns for 55 years but I've never been shot at.That said,I live in a 36 acre compound pretty much out in the country.

Today I was out in my yard and I'm pretty sure I heard a bullet whizz by.Gunshots are so common around here that we pretty much don't even hear them but I would have noticed one close by.

So......How close would the bullet have to come for a person to actually hear it go by.It was windy today so if a bullet did come by it was too noisey for me to hear it if it hit something nearby......

I'd guess they are sighting in, I doubt you'll hear the next one.

If it was windy and you heard what sounded like a bullet... you're one lucky ****.

A friend of mine heard the same thing just before he had a stroke.

It depends on the speed the bullet is traveling. I can tell you that an M16 round fired 500 yds away makes a mini sonic boom as it passes overhead.

They have to be very close too just hear the bullet fly by. We usually hear the report or the impact.

I have gotten pretty good at recognizing the sound of Incomming morter rounds. Can pretty mmuch tell how close they are going to be by the sound. You can definitely hear bullets whizzing by too. AK-47 rounds also make an interesting sound when they bounce off the uparmored Toyota you are climbing out of...

Luckily, Haji likes to shoot with the spray and pray method... Send a whole bunch of bullets in the general direction and pray for Allah to make sure one finds the person he wants dead. Oddly enough all of our rounds found thier targets and none of theirs did... I wonder sometimes if there is a lesson to be learned there...

Yes you can, its scary too when you hear the bullet whiz by but never heard the gun shot go off, that makes it a lot harder to protect your self from the next one. It'll sure make your butt pucker up

The ones that got close to me reminded me of a bee flying full speed right by your head.

I believe I saw on one of the History or national geographics, a bullet speed is about 760 feet per seconds ? But I could be wrong, I'm not postive.

I could be wrong, but I believe your posted information might not be reliable, but I'm not positive.

Sounds similar to what is in the movies. Think: 'Unforgiven' when the kid was shooting blindly into the field at Ned and Will.

I was standing in a ravine with no chance of getting hit, but the sound of bullets whizzing over my head made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

Depends largely on what bullet type, load and firearm its coming out of.. ranges from 600fps-2000fps as a generic range

Yes, you can hear a bullet and it's unforgetable. However, there's nothing more terrifying that hearing an RPG flying by you...
