Default Rage Against the Machine: Car Wash Meltdown Caught on Tape

Man's Car Wash Meltdown Caught On Tape
Upset With Bill Changer, Man Goes On $20,000 Rampage

POSTED: Monday, October 4, 2010

SAN ANTONIO -- Car wash owner Roger Outland said he was recently stunned by the behavior of one of his late night customers.

The man pulled into Outland's Lone Star Car Wash in the 19000 Block of Blanco Road on Sept. 17, to wash his black sports car. Based on security camera footage, everything seemed to go fine until the man ran out of change.

"I guess the changer didn't take his dollar bill and that was enough to set him off," Outland said.

Apparently frustrated by the machine, the man first bent the plastic cover then kicked the machine several times. He was just getting warmed up. The angry customer then walked from bay to bay beating the electronics with a spray gun then kicking them with his feet.

"Each one of those electronics he was kicking is $5,000 each and he kicked six of them and broke four," Outland said. "The odd thing about it is during the assault on the equipment he keeps checking his shoes to make sure he's not damaging them."

Outland said when the rampage was over the man had caused more than $20,000 in damage.

"If he felt like he was cheated all he had to do was call the problem number that's posted and we'd be happy to refund his money no questions asked," said Outland.

Instead, Outland is now trying to hunt down the man behind the meltdown so he can press charges and maybe get the guy into some anger management classes.

"He was well dressed. Nice looking car. It doesn't look like money was the issue. It was really just basic anger," said Outland. "He could have used a credit card. He could have walked over to the CVS to have gotten change. There was a number of things he could have done but he chose to do the wrong thing."

Outland has already repaired the damage caused by the irate customer and now he's planning to add more cameras so he can capture license plates just in case this ever happens again.

That is what happens here in this little town where I work. We only have one car wash & some one will get Pi**ed off when some thing doesn't work right & destroy all of the rest over a couple of bucks.
I hope you catch him.

Didn't take much to set him off. Hope they catch him before he decides road rage is next.

I kinda feel his pain. 90% of the car washes around here are complete ripoffs and you'll never get your money back.

Only a heathen Phillistine would take a Porsche through a car wash with mechanical brushes from the get-go.

I have a good friend who has ran some car washes around here with his father for going on 35 years. When the carnival comes into town they always seem to get robbed. I even sat on a stakeout with him one night, waiting for them to get hit again for the fourth night in a row. We caught the guys that night. Another night a couple of guys tried to break into a Coke machine on the premise and the thing fell on top of one of the guys, smashing his pelvis. He didn't do that again.

Two sides to this story. And it gets worse as the world becomes more "automated".

This could be a helpful lesson to electronic designers, to understand the level of frustration their gizmo's can instigate.

For every time my cell phone works according to plan, there is another time I want to pitch the thing out the window because the touch screen refuses to pull up the pressed icon. It is truly amazing what we are expected to put up with daily compared to 30 years ago.

I know some Porschephiles who won't even use those. Griot's Garage and baby diapers to dry 'em all the way.

Still no excuse to cause $20k in damage to someones property over a $5.00 car wash.
Hope they catch the loser and nail his azz to the wall.

But I understand where you're coming from

Huh?!

In what world is it ok to do what this guy did? There is no explanation and certainly not two sides to vandalizing someone's business for $20k

Even if the poor put-upon Porsche owner had *gasp* car wash soap dry on his car, I'm pretty sure it would come off.
