from NY to CA? UPS ground looks to be about $35.

just shipped a package from denver to indiana. 25 lbs. 41 x 10 x11 via fedex ground $19.86

try fedex, usually seem to be a bit cheaper and their service is much beter. UPS beats the **** out of their packages and most of the time forget to deliver them.

USPS (US Mail) flat-rate shipping is a very good deal for shipping dense/heavy things that are still small enough to fit into one of the flat-rate box types.

UPS-ground seems about the cheapest once you are going by weight.

As an aside - I recently ordered a mini-spare tire and wheel (i.e. "donut") for one of my cars (that didn't come with a spare of any kind), from an eBay seller. (So you can picture the size and weight.) It was shipped UPS ground.

It showed up yesterday and there was no box of any kind. The mini-spare had been wrapped in a bunch of clear-plastic wrap, with some tape, and the shipping label was just taped on. I guess nothing says that the item has to be in a rectangular cardboard container...
