Default "Lot of abandoned race tracks in America?"

There is a car commercial running saying that recently. Are there lots of abandoned tracks in America? Does anyone know where one or more are? If true would be a cool project to buy a property and rehab it for a club or house on the property.

Absolutely... I am fortunate enough to live next to Meadowdale Raceway near Dundee, Illinois. You can still walk on parts of the track. I believe one of the Grand Sports (maybe #003) ran one of its first races there sponsored by Doane Chevrolet of Dundee, Il.

They built a nice new one here about 4 years ago, took two seasons to bankrupt it, vacant ever since.

The SCCA magazine SportsCar has done a year or so long story on the lost race tracks around the US. It was a great series of articles and I'm sure you could probably dig them up somewhere online even.

I think they were called Ghost Tracks or something.

Lakeside speedway in Kansas City Kansas is underwater right now, so I guess it is abandoned.

They have gone the way of drive-in movies. Killed by lack of interest, lawyers, accountants, and insurance companies. One of my childhood favorites is now a water park (Dorney Park, near Allentown, PA).

LACR closed few yrs ago.
Heard Fontana is on its way out. People suing left and right.

unless youre trying to learn how to launch your car 1/8 mi is a waste of time.

Leaves us with Famoso almost 2 hrs away.

Yep, street racing is a problem.

there is a 1/4 mile track about 2 miles from my house. It was open and hosting races every weekend until about 2007. A developer bought the property to put in houses right before the economy tanked so it is just sitting there intact but unused.

The old San Antonio Raceway closed a few years ago. It is a 1/2 mile oval. Toyota built their truck plant just across the road from it, and the owners promptly closed it. We spent a lot of Saturday evenings there when I was growing up.

Pennsboro, WV.

2 of the 3 biggest dirt late model races in history were held here. The Dirt Track World Championship (DTWC) and the Hill Billy 100.

The Legend. Jim Dunn first winner of the DTWC in 1981. Started dead last and drove around Rodney Combs, on the outside, with 12 laps to go and won it.

Rodney a few years later in 1983 at the Hill Billy. This is the era of the BEAUTIFUL wedge body cars.

Jeff Purvis in 83.

Neglect has allowed it to slowly become unuseable. A legal battle rages over what is now an unuseable racetrack. The last race held there was in 2002 (1997 before that) and I'm pretty sure it will never be raced on again.

I'll remember the good old days. Post wedge cars 1988.
