Default Possible to Recall a Wire Transfer?

I'm purchasing an enclosed trailer several hundred miles away and as part of the deal, I am sending a partial payment via wire transfer to the seller. If the trailer is not as advertised, can the wire transfer be reversed or recalled? I did a little research and it appears that it can, but not sure of how difficult it is.

I figured I would check in here before calling my bank on Monday.

Not sure but for future purchases I'd use Paypal.

Good plan, 'cause what the hell would your bank know about it?

Not true. It is however very difficult, and if they move the money right away, its likely gone.

I hope the deal doesn't fall through as it might be difficult to reverse.

On another note, about 3 years ago when I sold my C5 to a guy in Kansas, the buyer of my car did a $25,700 wire transfer into my account on Friday and then flew in on Saturday to buy the car and drive it 1000 miles back to Kansas. He had hired an inspector to come to my house and take over 50 photos of it from every possibly angle.

I hope your deal goes as smoothly as mine did. I got an email from the guy in Kansas just a few weeks ago and he still has the C5 and still loves it.

I do believe you can clawback funds. Something to talk to your bank account.

Not sure just how difficult it is to get the funds back if the situation arises either, but hope that it doesn't come to that. Perhaps before you send the transfer you could get something in writing from the seller with a refund provision included should the trailer not meet your expectations.

Why not ask the seller if the money can be put in escrow for a short period of time? Or draft up a warranty / deposit refund clause and present it to the seller before you send the money.

Wire transfers typically go into escrow accounts. You provide your bank with the money and they place it into an escrow account. When you are satisfied with the purchase, you authorize release of your funds to the seller's bank escrow account. The seller's bank then transfers the money to the seller.

Wire transfers usually are done within a few hours, so if it's possible, you should look at the trailer and decide on the purchase, then call your bank to initiate the wire transfer. Is there a certificate of title that goes with the trailer? Make sure the seller has it; if he owes money on the trailer, make sure he can pay the note off to release the title.

Some real good information here...much appreciated.

The main issue here is the Seller wants a 1/3 deposit before he meets me at a half way point, at which time I would provide the balance in full. If there is a way to OK the deposit once we physically meet and I can inspect the trailer, that would be ideal. Seems like this can be done from the posts above.

If i rememebr correctly the advice given by all online places cautions one to avoid that.. looks like this...

Avoid scams and fraud by dealing locally! Beware any deal involving Western Union, Moneygram, wire transfer, cashier check, money order, shipping, escrow, or any promise of transaction protection/certification/guarantee.

I'm just saying.. you may have just donated to the haitian defense fund or something.

Why don't you post the city that the trailer is located in and ask if a CF member who lives in that city could go inspect it for you?

I definitely would not wire any money until you or someone on here has laid eyes on the trailer.

Wow has this thread turned bizarre. I do appreciate the "real" responses.

As for the others, legitimate wire transfers and Nigerian scams are not even in the same universe. As an attorney, I've been paid via wire transfer before. The simple question was whether they can be recalled (and if so, how easy or difficult).

Like I said in the first post, I fully plan on talking to my bank Monday morning. Just looking for a little feedback between now and then.

Good idea. I've done that on 2 other forums, but no responses yet. The trailer is in the the corn fields of IN and not a very populous area.

And just so everyone who participated knows, I have been sent a copy of the title and researched the VIN. The seller is legitimate...it's the condition of the trailer I'm a bit nervous about.
