I owned a 65 GS; dual quads.

I think those Buicks were one of the most beautiful cars to come out of Detroit, ever.

The article suggests that the guy has 20000 hours into it and guesses at a build price of 300k. At ten bean an hour, that's 200k right there, and I doubt a body shop works for ten beans an hour. All of the custom plumbing for the swirlies add loot, as does the rest of the car. My guess is closer to 600k invested.
Here is my 2 cents from a professional builders perspective. He is the builder, so he isn't counting his labor in the 300k. The 300k would be for parts, materials, donor car and anything he farmed out like one off machined wheels/parts. So take his 300k figure and add 20,000 hours at a shop rate of say $65/hr and you get $1.6 million. Now you know why when a customer walks into a professional shop and says he wants them to build a Ridler, the next words out of the shops mouth are, "Do you have a million to invest in the project?"

I believe every bit of that, which was my point. typical magazine guy putting out half the story. I recognize what stuff costs and applaud those guys doing it to advance the hobby.

The craftsmanship and attention to detail looks pretty intense for sure. The problem is the look is straight out of the '90s with some mid 2000s wheels thrown on.

I did not know Ecklers had a catalog for classic Buicks. What an abomination.

I fail to see the logic in that build

That's because that's when they started it.

Eww.... Sure i can appreciate the work and skills involved but that thing is hideous. Quite possibly the ugliest rims on a classic.

Bad ***.

Building a car to make the Great 8 is an accomplishment, much less winning the Ridler. A friend of my dad's built 2 cars that made the Great 8, easily $200K in each of them, and he did it in his basement.

Here is the very very close second place car.

Probably would have won if only it had ground effects on the front.

The Riviera is a classy car, designed for the upper class. Its also one of the most beautiful cars GM ever made.

This yellow monstrosity appeals to the more-money-than-brains-and-taste crowd. Now it looks like the crowd on "Pimp My Ride" or "Unique Whips" have been messing around with it. Sad.

I would guess the award was given for the craftsmanship. I don't care much for the outcome.

The owner has quite an imagination to come up with something like that. Well done.
