Default Escalade EXT Vs. Supercharged Range Rover Sport

Because I am going off to college next year I am being forced to trade in my 07 z for something bigger and more practical. I am also going to use it to tow my '08 x-45. I have basicly narrowed it down to an Escalade EXT (My dad drives a regular escalade and I like it) or a Land Rover Range Rover Sport Supercharged. Both 07 or 08 slightly used. Anyone owned both or have a preference why I should get one over the other. I'm prolly gonna test drive the land rover this weekend. Also what are the capabilities to tune either. My z is putting out 600hp and this will be the first car I have driven that doesn't have over 400hp (and weighes over 4,000 lbs). any feedback is welcome!

You better buy two Range Rovers, One to drive one for the shop...
I don't know if they have gotten any better since 2006 but I know they had huge reliablity issues.

That's what my friend says about Jags...I'll strike that as one for the Ext

Much more room in the GM SUVs and the local mechanic in Podunk can fix it, as opposed to flat-bedding the Rover back to the rapacious dealer service department in the big city.

Do you really want to look like a Beverly Hills housewife?

When we bought the Hummer H2 about a year and a half ago we looked at a number of SUV's...... my wife initially wanted a Rover Sport but she also really liked the H2, Cayenne and Escalade so we did some research and drove them. The Rover and the Cayenned were just too small and similar in size as what we were getting rid of (05 Explorer Eddie Bauer). After she drove the H2 it was the winner hands down but it was a close run with the Escalade after she drove it. I would look at the Escalade EXT and the Hummer H2 SUT since both are the Pickup truck style (if that is what you like) and go from there. Both vehicles can be tuned easily (HP Tuners) and have a big aftermarket. Keep in mind that your talking about 5-6K lbs. worth of weight you will be driving around so they are by no means gonna be fast compared to driving a car like a vette. If you want a fast SUV go buy a turbo Cayenne or SRT-8 Cherokee...... I have driven both and for SUV's they offer downright impressive performance.

Yea I drove my dads hummer for a few months a few summers ago and I enjoyed it but it was just a tad toe bulky for me. I'm going to be in austin and that was the only reason I am considering the smaller Rover Sport. I have always loved the escalade and it seems that there is a reason for that the more I look into it.

Personally, I would look at a Tahoe LTZ instead. The RR will be in the shop a lot and the EXT doesn't have near the cargo capacity of a Tahoe.

I'm sorry that I don't have any pertinent advice, but I can't help but be amused at your hard decision. When I was off to college I certainly wasn't forced to consider selling my almost new Z and having to decide between an Escalade or Range Rover.

Which ever way you go, good luck to you.

I know it's sick but someone has to do it Hopefuly a test drive will answer all my questions. The only problem is the vette will be worth a good amount more in a trade than the escalade and it's not like the dealer is just gonna gimme the amount. wheras the ranger rover supercharged is right around the same price. One i test drive the range rover i should know. It is gonna have to drive damn well for me to think it's better than an escalade.

The Hummer was "too bulky" but an Escalade EXT is ok? I'm pretty sure the H2 is smaller than the Caddy.

Disagree hummer is wide with poor turning radius and drives extremly heavy. Escalade drives more like a car. Doing 80 in a hummer feels like death but in the escalade it's comparable to a sports car

I had the same thought....when I went off to college, I sold a worn out Toyota econobox and bought a used less worn out Toyota semi-econobox.

Get the Escalade. It's more reliable than the Range Rover Sport. Roomier also. I live in Amsterdam, so big American Escalades aren't very common, but the ones that drive around draw huge crowds. It's extremely nice looking. I have driven one for a few miles, totally better than the family xc90, if that helps. Black with factory 22's, can't beat that And the 409 hp mated to the 6 speed is very quick.

The Hummer is wider and has a bit more obstructed view than the Escalade. The Escalade is a bit softer riding but I would have to argue the statement about doing 80 in the Hummer feeling like death. I have taken a few road trips with mine and I find it to be quite comfortable, I also go down the road at 80MPH quite often and I have never had an issue. The Hummer is more stable at 80MPH than the Escalade due to the Escalades softer suspension.

Gotta disagree man. I drove a hummer for 3 months and once from DFW to west texas 5 hours. Also from DFW to colorado (16 hours).

Are we talking H2's in both cases? Sounds like the OP might be talking about an H1. Just making sure we are comparing apples to apples.

Escalade all the way. I was in the same boat. Test drove and researched both. The escalade is a lot roomier inside. What really killed the deal is all the problems the RR have. Just look at where RR ranks on the JD power rankings. Not good.
