Viper SRT10 ACR Rewrites the Record Books
Thursday, 14 April 2011 15:35
The Dodge Viper may be out of production and only the last few remain at a handful of Dodge Dealerships, but it’s still setting lap records wherever it shows its fangs. Last Monday, veteran road racer Kuno Wittmer took a production street legal Viper to the world class Miller Motorsports park in Tooele, Utah and blazed a new lap record. Wittmer drove his venomous V10 powered ride around the 3.048 mile course in just under two minutes – 1:59.995 to be exact. This shattered the previous times that were held by a ZR1 Corvette by more than three seconds.
Our Viper SRT10 ACR has set lap records from the rolling hills of California’s Laguna Seca to the infamous Nürburgring nestled near the majestic Eifel Mountains in Germany. The ACR package is a finely tuned machine and makes for a great track car that you can drive home.
“It’s amazing to come to this world-class track and shatter the production car lap record by almost 4 seconds,” said our Bryan Viger who heads up Dodge Motor sports. “We brought our street-legal Viper ACR to see what Kuno could do behind the wheel, and on his second lap he’d already gone faster than the single lap record.”
A veteran behind the wheel of the Viper on and off the track, Wittmer continues to be impressed by the performance of the Dodge Viper ACR. “Wow, what an awesome super car!” the Montreal native said after he climbed out of the cockpit. “The Viper ACR is such a blast to drive at the limit, and I can honestly say that I didn’t leave an inch out there on the track and was barely braking in the corners.”
The Viper plant may be idle for now, but the legacy of the vehicles that rolled off its line is still rewriting the record books at race tracks around the world.

Looks nice but wish the ACR had the same kind of tire compound that the ZR1 has so it would have been a better comparison. Doesn't the ACR come with Race tires? Super fast car none the less.

No surprise. As I've said all along, the ACR is a track monster. Nearly 4 seconds faster than Jan Magnussen could muster in the ZR1 is enormous. Likely a similar distance between a base Vette and a ZR1.
BTW - The ACR tires are street legal. The same ones the Porsche GT2/GT3 use if memory serves.

Stock for stock, I don't think any informed enthusiast disputes the ACR is faster on the track than a ZR1. But, my wife will ride in the ZR1 as it is relatively quiet and smooth around town with a comfortable interior and I know for a fact she would ride in an ACR once.
I like the dual-nature of the ZR1, very potent track weapon, but can also be daily driven easily by grandma. Can't say the same for the ACR.

Put the same tires on the ZR1 to be fair and see what happens. You all know that Sport Cups are a dedicated "street legal" track tire just like a drag radial is....not real world street tires that you can drive in the rain and still be safe.
You can hardly compare the 2 cars once you have driven both, 2 very different handling and marketed cars. And yes I have driven both C5/C6 Z06&ZR1 and Gen 1/2/3/4 Vipers in stock and highly modified trim. I do enjoy both cars in totally different ways, most people can't say that honestly.

Cool and all, but I wish they would get tested together at the same track same day just once so we can see the difference with equal track conditions. Instead of trying to compare lap times from a 90+deg July day (+8000ft DA) with a 50 deg April day (+4000ft DA). And yet again, they are comparing a dedicated track day effort by Dodge to times from a magazine comparison where track time is limited to try and get all cars tested. I would expect the ACR to be 2-3 sec faster on a 3 mile track just based on tires alone in equal conditons.
One other thing that I noticed was that the press release makes sure to note that it was street-legal but there was no mention if the car was factory stock or not.

Guys, those are the stock tires. Can't blame Dodge for spec'ing top rubber for its top car. ZR1 would likely be just as fast with the same rubber, but GM doesn't offer it that way bone stock. Maybe with the Centennial Edition Corvettes, that might change.
Great result for a naturally aspirated car @ 4400' elevation.

To break a track record is a big thing for any car.
We cannot ignore however, the elephant in the room. There is no street legal track tire available for the ZR1 in OEM sizes. That is what the ACR has. Tires will make a big difference.
