Reliable Exotic

Outside of the Vette/Viper, 911 is a good choice. However what defines an exotic, Rare? Unreliable? Expensive? Performance? Although there are $60k cars out there that can beat a lot of exotics in a straight line.

Op, what ferrari do you own now?
I have spoken to George Evans, owner of Evans Automotive in columbus about this many times. He is considered one of the foremost experts in the US, if not the world, when it comes to exotics.
360's and especially F430's can be pretty reliable.
Gallardos are as reliable as an R8. Murcielagos can be decently reliable too, only problem with them is that when something does to wrong, it can be very expensive to fix. My friends murcielago sat without a charger while it was getting painted flat black, it was pearl yellow, and after the car was put back together he jumped it to get it started. Well, that is a no no and he fried something in the dash, cost him $8000 to get repaired. At Evans, of course.
Stay away from early db9's. They have crankshaft issues, among many other problems.
Ford GT's are as reliable as a mustang and look and perform like an exotic but they are getting so expensive now a days. They were $140-$160 new but now you could easily be looking at $300k+.
Vipers give you that exotic look and performance but are pretty reliable. They arent nearly as sophisticated as a f430 or gallardo, but they are sure cool. I got more looks riding around in the viper than the f360 spider.
Porches are reliable, I don't really think of those as exotics though.

here you go.. right up your alley.. of course the price has gone up considerably since 2006.. (on Ebay the highest one is listed at 529,995.00 and the cheapest is one that was wrecked and rebuilt for 195,000.00, and average seems to be between 275 and 320K)

My two cents....McLaren is garbage one of my friends buddy had a mp 4 12c and said it was constantly in the shop and had horrible build quality. My friend has a Ferrari 360 and says it is killing him slowly in repair costs and he barely drives it. He mostly drives his maserati gran sport and loves it 2013 in white with black leather interior. Mercedes sls is pretty cool.

The R8 wins hands down for reliability and lowest cost to own. Negotiate Audicare into the purchase price, (it generally costs about $1200 on the R8 iirc), and that will be your total cost for 4 years/50K miles for all maintenance. No other exotic comes close. Plus the car is super reliable, although some owners do have issues with the magnetorheolic shocks leaking early. But it's super fast, especially in V10 mode, very comfortable with the adaptable shocks that are standard on the non V10 Plus version, and can easily be driven as a DD if you wanted. And it still looks great.

The made in Italy aspect of the Gallardo's scares me after my personal experience with Italians supercars. Audi R10Plus it is! I'm hunting it down now.

Safety Car
Not sure what your preference is for transmission but keep in mind that the 2013 and older R8's with auto trannys have the single clutch setup vs. the dual clutch in the 2014+ cars...... the dual clutch car drives much better. If I was looking at older R8's I would be seeking out a manual trans car.

Then you've met very few R8 owners. I owned a 2010 V10 R-Tronic and the car was fantastic in every way. It was the best high performance car I've owned, and not once, even though I knew it's DNA came from the Gallardo, did I or would I tell someone that it's "just like" a Gallardo. IMHO, it is better in just about every aspect. Unless being 'seen' is the most important thing to you of course.
