Anyone here familiar with Beck 550 Spyder
The more I look at it the more I like it.
Was wondering if anybody here has any experience with it.
Any particular issues or problems to look for.
Nice examples are going for around 30K
Car weight about 1300lbs with subie motor 2.5L rated at about 200hp

I want one of these badly. They are such fantastic little cars.

I have worked on a few (3) of these, and the quality is really up to the original builder. The ones I was dealing with had hot VW motors. But all of them were fast, as in chasing 600cc sport bike fast. I imagine with 200 or so hp, no weight, and tiny (relatively) tires, it will be a fun handful. But they turn heads, ladies love them, and for a fun in the sun car, I think they are great.
Even with the Subie motor, I imagine the trans is backwards and upside down (for mid-engine) so make sure the shifter is sorted. The VW versions I dealt with never shifted well.
Just be prepared to go over it really well yourself before trusting it. Like any used car.
These are tube frame cars, no VW floorpan, all fabricated. Porsche trim (gauges, column, lights and badges, so on..) can get expensive, and sometimes figuring out which car donated which part can be tricky, but that is true of any replica/kit.

Great little cars, a real blast to drive on the street or motorcross. I have never been in a Subaru powered one but those with the air cooled engines are fairly quick with the 2165cc (160hp) engine. I would imagine one with the Subaru engine would be even more fun.
Are you thinking about a new one or a used one?
The early ones built from a kit (early 1980s) deserve close scrutiny as all the guys who built them didn't have the skills needed. As of the late 80s I think all were factory built and most were fitted by Beck with engines and trans.
Service can be performed on the VW powered ones by anyone with air-cooled VW experience, normally just valve adjustment.
I had one for several years and really enjoyed it.
The good thing is they don't lose their value, in fact, if taken care of them, they appreciate.
