interesting. i was working with a customer that was having all sorts of trail braking issues. we found out the front and rear calipers had the same part number. i also noticed after a quick google search that the viper calipers have different part#'s. i wonder what year car this was. Or if someone had messed with it. i remember it exactly becasue to solve the issue i recommended a lower tq pad. the owner wanted MORE and refused to use a lower Tq rear pad because he thought it would slow him down. he asked if we had a higher TQ front pad (he was already on the highest tq pad we offered). after not finding it he continued to use the same rear pads that gave him too much trail braking.

Gen 3 will be much more liveable if you want something like that. Hell you can find a Gen IV in the upper 40s if you don't mind miles on the car. 600+ hp stock, hard to beat the value of a nice Gen IV IMO.

that's why i remember the story so well. the fact he refused to fit it was alarming.

Agree, if OP is not set on a GenII, a higher miles Gen IV ACR are approaching low 50's if you look around. If you want in on a Viper and track the car, a great way
to go, and will hold value pretty good.
Red/black ACR, high on my list............

I just picked up another GTS for a daily.
Had a '99 ACR for a daily and loved it, put 20k miles on it in a year. My '97 B/W drew MUCH more attention than the silver ACR, so if you're trying to stay under the radar a bit, go with a more subtle color.
Almost C5 cheap to own. Wire loom in doors can get severed over time and need to be repaired/replaced.
'98+ - power mirrors & alarm reset key in glovebox
'99+ - upgraded interior, recessed fog lights, updated radiator fans, 18" wheels, ACR available
'00+ - cast motor, less aggressive cam & plastic impeller for water pump
'01+ - abs

When buying check motor mounts, power steering pulley, and clutch as the slave tend to go at this age.
At the least go high flow or just eliminate the cats, add a cat back , the door sills will not get hot anymore and the car will sound real good (especially of you go 96-99, which all have the lumpy 708 cam.
If you are looking to mod I would go 98-99 as they both have the forged motors and 18imch rims, the 98 doesn't have the electronic mirrors and updated interior, not a biggie, these cars love mods.
Gen 2's are timeless... Enjoy

I would love to buy a Gen 2 GTS, but I would never consider one for a daily driver. Sounds like you should be shopping Gen 3 coupe (2006 only), and if you can swing it, Gen 4 coupe (2008-2010). Gen 3+ could be used for daily driving no problem. They are a lot nicer cars than the Gen 1-2.

For a guaranteed 40 grand, the 2003-2006 Viper is the best bang for the buck, if you like the style, and can overlook the bland interior. They really do perform well on the racetrack, not quite a C6 Z06, but close.
If you can break that budget a little, try to find a higher mileage 2008-2010 Viper. They look basically identical, but the improvements that are hidden, are simple, but vast. The rear differential is a lot better, doesn't have the slop the previous generation did. They got the new cam in cam engine with 600 HP, and these engines love headers and exhausts, they make huge performance gains with just those. And not 100% sure, but think that they also got the revised TR6060 to replace the T56 tremec manual.
Visually, the 2008 and up Vipers also got the larger 6 vent hood, which I think really makes the car.
