My DIL had to have her 2002 Silverado towed last Saturday to the dealer, no one else was open. Turned out to be the fuel pump which I suspected.
I'm wondering what you all would estimate the job at $$$$$ wise.
Dealer had the part and was done in 2 hours.
Any guesses ?????

This is all just an estimate.

But look up the the average cost of that fuel pump would be online, multiply by 2.

Most shops/dealers charge anywhere from 125-175 an hour.

I always expect the worst so call it 175 an hour, 2 hours is 350.

Say pump costs 100 bucks online, it's now 200 because dealer has it, plus they make money on selling you the part too.

So i would guess around 600 bucks.

$500 sounds high but would not be surprised if it were more.

The fuel pump is on top of the gas tank so they are either dropping the fuel tank or removing the truck bed to get to it. I removed the bed because it was easier for me. I would guess they are charging 6-8 hours labor plus $250 for the part.
My guess $1100.00 - $1200.00
What do I win?

AC Delco pump on Rock Auto - $140-210
Say 3 hrs labor - $300-450
Total - $450 (not a chance) - $700.

So far you get the banana, first bill was over $900 but they cut them a little slack and wound up at $800++. I was flabbergasted.
Average estimate from 3 independent shops were $450-$500.
You make the call if dealers are gouging, I know what I think
Thanks

They charge list price on the pump which is well over $460, add 3 hours labor....adds up quick. Plenty of wiggle room there on the parts which is why they probably dropped it down.

It still hurts though.

I've done a bunch of them in my shop, easiest way is to lift the bed off. Pump is right there after that.

PS so what are we going to do about it ?
I went to a shop that a guy opened 5 years ago that I knew from the ole Hot Boat Forums days, he was a mechanic at the local Ford dealer before that. I talked with him, looked at the shop and told him myself and my two sons with a total 7 cars between us would be coming to him in the future.

Where abouts are you? Must be near one of the big lakes.

No snow here in the Finger Lakes, but it's only 19°.

After I got out of the Air Force years ago, I just happened to get a real good job locally within a month. My original plan was to go out west, but between that and family all here.....you know the rest.

When I retire, hopefully I'll end up where I never need to see snow again, except maybe on TV when the Weather Channel broadcasts from here...

Niagara Falls area.

Supposed to be near 55 by Thursday, so it's not all that bad yet.

Just as an aside, be sure to let your daughter know that she should not let the gas level drop past the last 3-4 gallons. The pump starts working harder, heats up, and if there is not enough fuel to help cool it, it will overheat. Also, gunk that is at the bottom of the tank can get sucked up and ruin the pump. I learned the hard way on one of my many Silverado's.

I've done this before. It's a typical Chevy truck problem. It's a pain to do if you don't take off the bed or don't have access to a lift and a transmission jack. A private garage will be cheaper than the dealer and they probably will have experience doing it as it is a common problem.

That's the bad part, all of them said we do it all the time, GM, wonderful eh ?????
Lesson learned as I said and one shop will pick up whatever repairs are need on 7 family cars.

I bitch to my bride all the time about WI's (Winter) weather.
Her reply's two words: "population density".
She's correct, if the weather were nicer we'd be over-run & the beautiful area ruined. So end of argument, I just shaddap.

$800+ sounds about right, for a dealer.
While getting new skins for my Z I'm advised front discs/pads need replacing. Fine, give me a quote. 2 new discs & pads w/ labor: $850.

Motivated by sheer anger I do a little research.
Found AC Delco OE discs/pads/pins from Amazon for ~$300 & $125 to install by a local indy. $425.

Dealers gouge plain & simple, so forewarned is forearmed.

Yup, that's another advantage.

I live in the valley behind the hill to the right:

Same shot in the winter:

All the wimps are huddled in their houses or have gone to Florida.
Solitude except for the occasional ice boat or ice fishermen:

As I've said ad nauseam, there is no perfect place to live.
