Default The 'Back to the Future' Car Is Going Back Into Production -But No Flux capacitor!

DeLorean Motor Company CEO Stephen Wynne recently told KPRC in Houston that the iconic car made famous by the 1985 classic sci-fi film "Back to the Future" will go back into production for the first time in more than three decades.

About 300 replica 1982 DeLoreans will be produced under a manufacturing bill approved by the federal government.

“It’s fantastic,” Wynne told the TV station. “It’s a game-changer for us. We’ve been wanting this to happen. ... It means we're back as a car company again.”

Since the company moved to Humble, Texas, in 1987, it has been refurbishing dozens of DeLoreans shipped from around the world. The new DeLoreans will be the first manufactured on American soil.

A refurbished model currently costs $45,000 to $55,000, according to KPRC. Wynne would like to sell the new ones for a less than $100,000, depending on what type of engine goes in the car.

"There's no reason to change the appearance of the car. As we go into the program, we'll decide what areas need to be freshened up," he told KPRC.

He hopes to have the first new DeLorean ready for action in early 2017.

Theyve been trying to do this for years, as the company owns all the original tooling, parts and name for Delorean. The restoration business is probably "ok" but I'm sure they'd like to be able to build new cars with the parts and cash in to likely fund a new Delorean effort...of some sort. Finally the bill that was passed allows boutique manufacturers the ability to circumvent federal mandates...something my company "lobbied" for for years. We were trapped in a similar state as this company, and simply wanted to do a low production, non-mandated type of platform. In this country there are methods to avoid those mandates but it's not convenient. Europe has allowed a low production clause for a long time that allows small manufacturers to gain footing.

In the end, this bill wasn't enough and still keeps the doors shut on people coming into the market with new ideas. This simply allows for replicas of classic cars, which sucks. Hopefully there is wording in the bill of what defines a "replica" that leaves some open doors and flexibility of interpretation.

One small step...
