They've been trying to do that for a while...they have a lot of NOS parts to use and there just aren't enough restorations to justify their business I'm sure. They've been wanting to create electric cars out of them but no laws allowed it as a "new model" without crash validation, which clearly it wouldnt pass.
The new law allowing small boutique manufacturers to produce replicas of old cars without federal mandate opened the door for them.

Yeah...I wish it went a little further to include non replicas of older vehicles though. Opening up the country to being able to get its feet off the ground building something innovative and not having to make it a kit, would inspire new possibilities.
We've seen a lot of, what they refer to as "class b" manufacturers. These companies use existing and tested chassis, along with either existing and certified powerplants, or electric motors. It's a real maze to go through to do it all though.
I dealt a lot with the federal govt when we were moving toward getting our own manufacturer status. We actually DID obtain the ability to issue a VIN on our cars. I'm confident I weaved through a loophole to do it. It's unfortunate my partner succumbed to his IRS woes before we could really take the next step.
Europe allows for boutique manufacturers to exist, and it makes low production cool cars an option, except the US is just a better place for that. We like toys here....it's called "firstworld problems"...lol.

Melting Slicks
It will be interesting to see what they can do with these and if there will be a big enough demand for the new replicas.

I wonder if they will be made of plywood like the originals?

Will they have low end turd powertrains again?
I have an old mag where they legitimately compared the original turd to the Porsche 911, Ferrari 308 and Corvette. It wasn't pretty. The best feature it had was nice interior leather.

I'm really glad the DMC12 is back in production. If it has an LSx motor (or anything over 400whp) it will have even more of my interest.
