We live in a rural area of Texas, so I'd say more than 80% of our driving is highway miles. She's averaged over 26 mpg over the last 40K miles we've owned her. I've seen as low as 22mpg on an extended 90 mph trip, but my wife regularly gets more than 27mpg. Considering the 5200 pound curb weight and staggered 275/315 20" sport tires, I'm happy with that.

I think the newer Tahoes are knocking down low 20s with gas engines and a much larger profile.

Weight may not matter, but the rolling resistance of the larger staggered tires is a game changer. Lose the 20's off our X5 and replace with some 255-18" base wheels/tires and it would probably see 30-31 mpg. And Tahoes aren't anywhere close to the 22 city we're seeing in the X5, more like 12-14 (I've owned 4)! Like I stated, I'm happy with a 30-50% higher mpg, especially considering diesel is cheaper than regular here now. And the 10k-11k mile service interval is nice. DEF is a virtual non factor, using less than 3 gallons over 10k miles.
