Default Camaro crashes at Nurburgring

Not Corvette specific, but we talk a lot about the Camaro and its transmission, so...

As far as I'm aware everyone is OK. "The driver and passenger were both ok, but it looks like the Camaro took a pretty solid hit to the right front. " In the video (around 1:35, you're welcome) you can see the back brakes lock up first (no abs?) and then the fronts (no abs?). He gets it off track pretty promptly!

Forgive me if this is a dupe, I looked through the last couple pages of headings and don't see it!

looks like driver came in for a left-handed turn TOO hot, locked the brakes and couldn't recover; passenger side smacked into right side wall

Camouflage hides the damage pretty well. Then a body bag and loaded into the coffin. RIP.

But why no abs, and why would the rear brakes lock first? Are all bets off because it's an engineering vehicle and so we don't know what they were testing and how the car was set up?

Or could that happen in a production car too? Seems like a "bad thing" to trail-brake to lockup...

agree - catastrophic failure that definitely needs to be looked at before production

Yeah; no way to know what they were testing and what they were doing; certainly something funky going on there. If that was "software-induced lockup," I hope that subroutine doesn't make it into the production car......

One thing for sure, I don't care for the 'ricer' rear spoiler.

Agreed;

Pretty sure it wasn't software induced. Meaning the programming was the cause. Doesn't seem to be any software working at all.

You can see the driver reacts correctly but the car doesn't respond. Initially he brakes to correct his line and avoid going to wide. When he does this the rear tire(s) lock causing the nose to rotate right toward the inside curb and guard rail. At that point he correctly counter steers to make what should be a very minor correction. But under increased braking the front tires(s) lock up while he is making this correction. He continues to counter steer until he is at full opposite lock but all tires are locked and he is in a full slide until he hits the rail.

Point is with ABS and certainly any combination of ABS and active handling this crash doesn't occur. Hard to steer if the tires are locked up and sliding.

Ouch! Looks like it survived the hit well, all things considered.

makes me wonder if, #1 abs was disabled or mail functioned, #2 a missed downshift or something in the trans caused the rear tires to lock the way they did.

If you listen close you can hear the driver, "hold my beer and watch this drifting move" and then bam...

The Z-28 is a track weapon first and foremost, I think. Probably functional.

No doubt it is. The styling of it is terrible though.
