Anyone here going to own one and keep Z06? Just saw video on the Zl1 pretty impressive. Thoughts?

ZL1 is attractive because there is room for a turbo kit.

I was all hot and heavy for the new ZL1 but then I started thinking about it and finally came to the conclusion that if I'm going to buy a convertible and spend in this segment I might as well get what I really want!

I went from a modded 2006 300c SRT8 with 625rwhp, running 10.73@128.5mph to a 2010 CTS-V sedan with 609rwhp to a 2013 convertible ZL1 to a 2012 CTS-V coupe. The Z06 has more usable power than all of the above and in 3 years I never used the rear seats of my V coupe for anything other than road racing slicks. I can't imagine that a ZL1 for $63K (before dealer markup) with the same power and 400 more pounds is going to appeal to a Z06 owner.....but clearly I could be wrong.

My 2nd car $65K spend would go to a lightly used Jaguar XJR or Mercedes CLS AMG63.

Want to see and drive the ZL1 before I decide anything. I do like what I've seen and heard so far.

Wife wants a ZL1 Vert so she can haul the kids around in it. Was considering a new CTS-V but no stick in it.

I am looking at leftover Z06. I can't see owning a camaro after havING my first corvette for about 3yrs. They're nice cars but some guy some it up on here a while back. He talked about getting into a corvette is not like other cars. It's like putting on a superhero uniform lol. You Wear your corvette no other car I've ever owned (mustang camaro tbss G8) feels like that. I even rented a new mustang vert for carlisle trip as to not bother being my c6 so I could enjoy the other vettes here. Felt like clark Kent amongst the Legion of DOOM but as cool as the new mustangs and camaros are not same. Bigger, cumbersome and just not a vette.

If you have little kids I get it. I was there. Hence the tbss and G8. But they drive now so it's vette or nothing for me from now on! (Although you know the 18 c7 will have tested 10spd right? So the real question is who's waiting for the 18? Lol)

What is the weight difference between the ZL1 and a Z06? Also is the cooling on the ZL1 like the CTS-V? If weight difference is close and cooling is better, then it could be the better buy.

Default If it benifits from race gas like the new Z06?

It's more robust, and sophisticated with the A10 in place. Look for the A10 in the C7 mid-year, I'm thinking.

Curb Weight
Z06 = 3,524 - 3,582
ZL1 = 3,920 - 4,373*

*most quote 200lbs less than the old model's 4,120 - 4,374. Also remember that the convertible added serious weight.

A different, and a slower animal, but, it's solid!

I thought the new SS is in the 3500lbs range? I would suspect 3700lbs for ZL1.

No doubt. I was seriously thinking about getting one. My journey took a strange path. Frustrated that I'd taken my CTS-V as far as I could as a road racing weapon I created a short list of replacements. Z06 was on/off early with the on-track overheating issues. ATS-V was on until a test drive. Just couldn't do a V6. GTR was dismissed as more of a riding in, versus driving/piloting experience. Finally I test drove a Z51. While the chassis was unbelievably good, I missed the low end grunt of the LSA. What to do? Then the Z06 prices came down (momentarily) freeing up the cash to do a Callaway conversion. Problem solved.

3,685 for a manually equipped 1SS. Remember this is before heavy options like sunroofs. So 3,500lb SS Camaros are pixy dust, especially when you consider that's what a Z06 weighs.

Don't buy the new Camaro.
The visibility is so bad, it's actually dangerous.

The specs and driving experience are both amazing. Lower weight, LT1, and rev matching stick have been awesome.
Unfortunately, you just don't realize how bad the visibility is until after you buy one, and it gets worse the more you drive it.
I wish I never bought my 2016 Camaro SS.

I have been in my stock 06 Z06 for about 6 years now.

However, I now have a 3 y/o & our little family of 3 obviously cannot all fit.

I will consider a next gen used ZL1 to replace the Z06.

Need to drive one at some point.

I had no problem with visibility when I test drove one. The windows are not as tall as the Vette, but the door is longer. I plan to sell mine and pick up a '17 or '18 ZL1 depending on how the A10 performs.

Did you even read my whole post?

I did't have a problem with the 2016 Camaro SS visibility on the test drive, either.
But, after I BOUGHT mine, the visibility became apparent the more I drove it.
The visibility is downright dangerous.
The incompetent idiots who ruined the visibility for the clown car design should all be fired and be banned from auto industry.
GM should just give the ATS-V the LS9 or LT4 with the rev matching 7spd. Problems solved.

Chris Freza from the camaro show podcast loved his 2012 ZL1 m6 and recently traded in his car for a 2017 camaro 2ss A8.

His own words are that the camaro ss with A8 is just as quick as his m6 ZL1.

He had no plans to purchase a new camaro ss as he loved his ZL1...still when he test drove it while getting his wife's car serviced ...he made the deal right then and there. All of us who have enjoyed his podcasts for years were shocked with announce, net that the Ss was every bit of muscle car as his zL1 and the handling was even a cut above.

I totally understand where you are at with the kids and suggest looking at the camaro ss as its been offered at quite amazing deals with 20 percent off ...

I'm sure the deals will continue for quite some time .

Go for a test drive ...and then decide.
