How to verify 1979 Z28
Looking at a potential trade
Did the Z that yr have AC
opening below grill on this one is solid not vented
Tach or no?
Speedo goes to 130
Thought the steering wheels were wrapped this ones not?
Ive been away from these for awhile. .if it was faked wouldnt be such a bad trade but still...
Anything I can tell otherwise?
Vin, trim tag or?
DId this yr have the provision for cold air cleaner?

I sold my 1979 Z28 15 years ago........ From what I remember you cannot tell 100% from the VIN alone, the VIN should have the first 6 characters that read: 1Q87L9 and the 7th character should be a "L" or "N"
L designates a Van Nuys production vehicle in which the trim tag (on the drivers side cowl near the fender) should have a #8
N designates a Norwood production car and that trim tag should specify Z28
It would have a tach, the lower grill insert was solid, it was available with or without AC. My car had a wrapped steering wheel but I'm not sure it that was a standard option. Hope this helps.

From what I can find it should have a tach and gauge package, rope wheel, dummy hood scoop and solid (black) lower grill panel and fender vents. Unless that one is cheap there are too many questions.
It should look similar to this one.

Your pictures were not showing up when I replied earlier so I couldn't see the car. The lower grill insert looks to be missing on that car, hood scoop is incorrect (as noted by Millenium 04), no fender vents/louvers and lack of a tach....... I'd say you have an "attempted" clone/fake that you are looking at.

Not trying to be a "wise-azz", here, but consider this....By '79, the Z/28 package was so diluted, it was nothing more that the basic 350 engine, stiffer shocks and springs, front and rear roll bars, and a gauge package. If I were looking for a 2nd gen F-bod to play with, I'd be more concerned about the condition of the body, with respect to rust in the rear quarters, etc.
Not trying to bust your chops, as I was a LONG time F-body guy. It's just that the late 70s cars had been really "de-contented" at that point....

That is not a Z28. That is a Camaro that was pieced together to look like one. Wrong hood and front fenders to be an original 1979 Z28. I owned one for 6 years between 92 and 98.

Thanks for the tips
Sent seller a Q about the original fenders never heard back from his ad obviously trying to pass off a fake.
To a point I dont even mind was interested in doing a trade...just an interesting daily that looked Ok and I could work on that was carb'd
Always thought they had tachs...my 70 did but that was many yrs ago. I think most that didnt grow up wiht these cars dont know what to look for and buy fakes knowing less than me
most those cars are SO rotten or hammered when I see a decent one it catches my eye. I know they are pigs..for getting to work I dont care Im never on the throttle. Most my DDs stay stock

As others have said, that car is a clone. The hood scoop is from an 80, 79 Z/28's had a non functioning, front opening scoop. All Z/28's came with the gauges, a "rope" wrapped steering wheel with a "Z/28" emblem in the horn button, a silver "engine turned" dash insert, an inflatable "Space Saver" spare, black painted rocker panels, functional side fender louvers and cat back dual exhaust.
There was nothing in the VIN to identify a Z/28, but the 5th digit has to be an "L", which indicates a 350, the only engine available in the Z/28. The 350 in the Z/28 was rated at 175 hp, 5 more than the 350 in regular Camaros, likely due to the dual exhaust.
An automatic Z/28 should have a 3.42 rear (3.73's with a 4 speed), while regular Camaros got a 3.08.

Knew I could count on this section havent kept up on these in so many yrs. Have to wait til more money comes along to get one I really want.
They are out there just cost a little more, finding a real one isnt easy.

We are all here to look out for each other.... Sorry to hear the seller ducked when you questioned him. Even if it was a fake/clone you may have still worked a deal that was acceptable to you. Keep looking, eventually the right car will come your way. Best of luck to you in your search!!!
