OP, how is the condition of the "baffle" that's between the water pump and engine block? FWIW, I had a '77 Pontiac T/A for almost 25 years, with the 400 Pontiac engine. I had a 180* t'stat in it, and it ran 180-185* all day long......

Try a good DeWitts or similar radiator

Put a nylon flexalite mech fan on with shroud
Summit has them they are cheap weigh a few ozs not noisy and never break period
Wire up a fan to come on at higher temps youll never he happier

Went the elec only route going back to former setup ran cool no power difference without the temp fluctuating.

I do recall something about the buffle when I had my water pump out. If its not sitting correctly or positioned correctly it can cause over heating problems. Call the ames Pontiac parts place and they may know.

Also, over time, they can corrode, and become ineffective.
