Well, I don;t like Tony George either, but he did have all the aces in the battle for open wheel racing - that is, Indy. I'm really not sure what makes the 500 such a big deal. Tradition certainly, but media coverage mostly - in my opinion.
Frankly, I think the fundamental problem is not quite so much the players as it is the cars. They are all, essentially, the same. At least, save for the paint schemes, they almost are. Even on the road courses, which seem to have come back, they still look much the same, but don't pass each other very much. It's boring, even to a long-time racing fan as me.
Maybe I'll just forget about the race and drop by the Tutta Bella (that's "Your fatness exceeds all forms of beautifulness") according to the Italian I learned when in Italy.

It saddens me that something so great was ruined by an ego that had more money than brains. Sound familiar?
