Even if they decide to go (rear) mid engine only, they definitely shouldn't get rid of rwd. Just look at how quick McLarens and the new Ferrari 488 are (both rwd and mid engine).
I feel like they'll still offer a "base model" Corvette available in the classic architecture, but who besides GM knows.
Interesting for sure. I find it hard to believe that it would only be a 5 year run since the car is selling pretty well. Not only that, but they released the Z06 in 2015 (or at least that was the first mode year it was available as) and the GS is upcoming in 2017 (late 2016 technically). I highly doubt they would announce another model above the Z06 in 2017 as a 2018 model. What more can they really do on the current platform?
- McLaren 650s/675 LT: 2.8 seconds
- McLaren 570s: 2.9 seconds
- Ferrari 488 GTB: 2.9-3.0 seconds

damn...base model at $80K?? my Z06 was $77K in 07 I realize we are 9 years down the road but $80K for a base model is a bit steep IMO

The main benefit to going mid engine is the main weight is centralized, making for quicker turning response compared to have the weight on each end like today's Vettes.

And to think how many Vette purists were upset with the Camaro taillights on the C7.
(they're gonna LOVE the Ferrari rear end on the C8 )

This idea really seems to be getting "legs" huh? I suppose it's inevitable but a base price of $80K seemsTo put it out of reach of cheap pukes like me.
I can understand why GM might be looking at things like hybrids, electric drive etc. Everyone else seems to be doing the same thing.
Maybe by 2018 $80K won;t seem so expensive. There are C7s already pushing that threshold and beyond. I just hope that they don't try to build their own Ford GT or Acura NSX and priced accordingly.
Seems to me that at the higher price they may be leaving a huge Gap between the C8 and the Camaro. Does that portend a higher performance Camaro?
I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

God forbid that, given 2018 will mark the 60th anniversary of the '58 Corvette that they don't offer us an "Anniversary Edition" with chrome strips down the rear and "Tribute" ersatz louvers on the hood - which I guess would have to be on the rear window since it will be a mid-engined car.

Phil:
I think you are onto something there with the 50th anniversary edition. Besides the chrome strip and the louvers I think they would need to add tacky vinyl stripes stating "50th Anniversary".

Tacky vinyl stripes? Oh, you mean, "commemorative insignia" (made of high quality adhesive-backed polymer)

Cool era we live in although the E-Ray seems a bit silly but I guess the others are doing it. Surprised they didn't save i-Ray since most things these days have an "i".

By the way, Mr Inside, would you mind advising me who is going to win the 2017 Super Bowl?
