Okay, a bit off topic, but had to share... Once we get the 'Pak moved out, we're going to get started on restoring Chip's "Squire Shop" I was hoping we'd get going on the '71 Miss Madison but it appears now I'll have to wait. Looking forward to working on the Squire Shop though. Sure hope we don't have to wear those Britannia jeans as part of our crew uniforms.

i remember watching The Squire Shop race. From what I remember, it was a pretty slow boat.

Actually the later boat was fairly competitive with Chip driving. Then one must remember that the dominant boats of the period were the Muncey's "Blue Blaster" and the Miss Budweiser.
I have a friend who has one of Bill Muncey's early boats. I dont know much but think he said it has a 144 or 170 Ford 6 motor. If there is any interest I will get a picture to share

Hmmm, off hand I can't figure out what it is.... By all means, send a photo or more details if you can. The Ford engine really throws me off since Bill's dad was a Chevrolet dealer in Detroit.

I will see him at coffee in the morning and go to his shop and take the pix. Engine size had to fit some kind of class as I remember.
brings back memories of going to the unlimited hydro races at miami marine stadium on key biscayne in the late 70s and early 80s watching the races and strolling the pits. the guy i worked for was a good friend of bernie little(owned 'miss budweiser' boat). so we got access to alot of areas. also got to go in bernies motorhome and relax and drink his beer! good times! ps .wasnt a fan when turbo engines came into the class, i liked the sound of the big merlins and rolls royce engines which apparently got pretty scarce 30-40 yrs after the war.
Great post. Brings back some good memories. There was an effort recently to restore the Marine Stadium, but I haven't heard anything in the last year or two. Any insight into that proposed project?
Sure would like to see some ore venues on the unlimited circuit, including Miami, but with Bernie gone I don't know who's down there to help push the effort forward.
I agree with you on the turbine boats. Interestingly, the boats are more reliable and the racing is more competitive than ever. Bu the thunder is missing. There's a group developing a new V-12 engine developing nominally 3000 HP that would seem perfect for the boats, but I think they're going to have to find a larger market than just the boats to use it.
In the meantime, we old crocks can just wallow in the memories of our youth. Nice note, Thanks.
Heres the pictures of a 1959 "Suuks" boat and I am sure I have the name wrong. He said it was number 4 of 4 boats built and was the former "Miss America". He has all of it and a fresh 144 Falcon motor as was in the 145 class back then. He has had the boat since the 70's. Looks like vintage affordable fun to me. He did say the boat used to be Red in color back in its heyday.

Nice looking boat. Never seen it before. There's a growing bunch of local people actually bringing out the old boats now and that would be a terrific one to see running again. Assuming it doesn't do so already. I didn't go to Lake Chelan this year for the annual "playday" so perhaps it was there already.
I don't recall Muncey having a such boat or running in that class. That's not to say he didn't drive it for somebody who owned it. According to my sources at the museum, Muncey's limited class boats usually carried the number 222 and the letter designating the class. "S" being a 145 CI class, as you note.

Phil, thanks for the tour. I got some great photos of some of the historic boats I used to watch when I was a kid. I really appreciate your hospitality and now that I am retired, I just might want to stop by once a week to work on the boats.
