Repairing cracks in bonding strips on a 1980
I am repainting my 1980. On both sides of the car on the rear quarter
panels, there are one inch cracks which start next to the rear bumper.
The cracks are on the other side from the bonding strips.
Today I repaired them but thought after I finished that I should have used resin and mat.
Instead I used a dremel tool to broaden out the
cracks and make a depression a bit further ahead of the cracks.
I then chopped up some fiberglass mat and mixed it in Vette Panel
Adhesive. I applied it in the depressions. I mixed up a second batch
without the mat to fill slightly above the surface. Tomarrow I am
planning to sand it smooth. Is this a good a repair or do I need to
redo the repair with resin and mat?

The common cracks are usually limited to the bonding seam itself. They tend to crack along the edges of the seam and sometimes across the seam like ladder rungs. Your repair is probably better than the factory seam just because it has some fiber in it.

I am currently doing the bodywork on my 1974. I had the same cracks you. They were on the panel that the rear bumper attaches to but right across from the bonding strips. I used resin and mat and then the vette adhesive to smooth it out. I have used the adhesive and fiber on some repairs and I think it also is a good repair. IMO you are good to go.
