Default sanding

ok i just bought a 85 corvette,the paint on it is really bad spider web all over and on the doors has paint chipping off with pits in it, so i need to sand it all the way down ,what is the best way to do this,i started block sanding with 80 grit till my arms fell off lol will wet sanding help ,thanks

You have to be careful, but I have done it this way:

Get a big compressor and a D/A. And get wet 80 grit paper for it.

Sand carefully with it and stop when you hit primer.

After you get all the paint off you can with the D/A, sand the rest of the paint and primer off by hand. Hand sanding primer off is much easier than paint. Do that wet too.

thanks for the info was a little nervous ,ive been doing it by hand but mite take me a year lol was afraid about the fiberglass .

Took my 72 down to bare glass. First removed most of the paint with a razor blade, then DRY sanded the original paint and primer off with 80 grit.

i strip my vette jobs with a da and 36 grit, but i have been doing this for 25 years, be careful...

If you get down to the gel coat, I would highly recommend an epoxy primer or your basecoat may bleed into the fiberglass and cause a reaction. If you have any low spots, do your filler work first, block it down and then epoxy primer.

never seen a use for it even as board paper. far as i go is 80 and not much of it. i blast vettes to get rid of old paint and repairs , dont use chemstrip either .

Never say Never, Actually, in 1954 some bodies were done with white Gelcoat, and many parts on pilot line cars, like the 63s were also gelcoated. I agree that most were not, but we cant say Never.
