I have painted numerous Snap-On tool boxes for a rep in the past....and I believe their paint is a DTM (direct to metal) paint.

Google 'direct to metal paint' and see what it says.

NO primer is required because it is a tool box...and not driving down the road or out in the rain. But do as you wish.

I always thought that the paint would stick better to primer than to bare metal.

DTM paint is made to stick as well as anything directly to metal. Adhesion of ANYTHING to metal is all in the prep work... paint or primer. DUB is just trying to save you some $$$ and time. DTM paint is perfect for a toolbox. If you're going for some type of "show" tool box, by all means prime it, wet sand it, base it, clear it, cut it and buff it. I'd go the DTM route. Good luck with your project.

Just remember...IT IS ALL IN THE PREP. So make sure your surface is ready for this paint.
