Default Can I prime a small metal piece with my epoxy base coat. .

that has the Urethane Reducer added instead of just using the epoxy primer with just the activator? I'd like to save a step and it's just for the gas lid. Thanks

Ps. I will strip all the old paint off of course on the cap

Use a self etching primer....that looks like aluminum and for good adherence, self etching primer on any aluminum first.

I have painted so many of these fuel doors with the emblem made into it. I would be careful on how much epoxy you apply on it. Because if you get to crazy with the coats...the film build can be excessive...and when you go and untape your emblem...you will have a ridge that will make ti look like crap.

I use a special etching primer from NEXA that looks kinda similar to the old yellow/green zinc chromate primer from the factory....and it goes on thin and bonds like heck. it is no longer available....but it is what I use for situations like this and the stainless steel trim for the 68-72 wiper door so the edge is not noticeable when painted.

MAN...I have taped many of these and they are a pain in the backside.

Thanks DUB, I'll watch the thickness. And yea, I just epoxy primed the wiper door on my '69. That little bit of chrome trim is a tricky piece to mask. The 69 will be rolled into 2016 to finish.

Yes it is...but I have found that the blue vinyl pinstriping tape from 3M works great. I run one piece of tape to get my edge exactly where I want it....so I can see the exposed stainless bead at the edge of the trim....then I use the blue pinstripe tape and put it to the edge of the tape I just previously applied. SO...when you unmask it...there are NO surprises in a mis-tape.

The emblem on the fuel door I have used the sprayable clear mastic...like what I use for murals....and also my wide mastic for doing graphics and flame jobs and carefully hand with an exacto blade.

I have never tried the 'slime'...that 'porchdog' mentioned. Something to look into.

slime is a water soluble coating i use to mask with. it sprays on with your gun and washes off with water. just do not put in sunlight . i used in doing custom work and when masking things like an emblem i find it easier than tape. when painting on a complete car is use it on chassis and engine .
