My opinion:
I can tell you that there is an issue with the top molding trim...because there should not be a gap. I would have to guess that the windshield is not original.
That being stated....you can use what you want.
Other than being slightly un-sightly...IF the top wide trim is sealed correctly...this gap will not cause for a water leak to the inside because this gap is in front of the lip of the frame where your top wide stainless trim lips over.
I have seen some cars where the owner used a silver caulk to fill in the gap....but...just remember..it is not going to stop a water leak...because water will still get in UNDER the narrow trim.
