Default Clearcoat application was going well then Murphy stopped by!

My problems are that I don't paint enough and that sometimes in my "booth" you can't see! I laid it on too heavy on the passenger door. Should have speeded it up on the vertical surface and didn't see it soon enough. Then some rusted metal flakes dropped unto the middle on the hardtop and got embedded into the clear. I picked them out and don't know if it's spot repairable or if the roof needs to be redone. Other than that it seems OK cept for a few bugs that decided to commit themselves in the clearcoat.

Thanks Dave, I needed that

Like I said, Layin' on the clear

I do this for my own amusement. There isn't enough money for me to do this for someone else.

I can clearly see why you had problems with the hard top.

It is being supported too close to the ground and needs to be high up like the hood and rear deck....if that was actually where it was when you clear coated it.

It can all be fixed...like previously mentioned.

Yeah, thanks DUB.

I had to manouver those pieces by myself. I should have positioned the HT higher. I'm going to try and spot repair it. If that don't work, I'll do it over. Thanks

I learned a long time ago not to set parts upon buckets and such that are close to the floor. Even in my paint booth...the air from the gun stirs up stuff that is on the floor and gets into parts. I then began the practice to make sure they are up high.

You should be ok in going your repair. Just have it in your paint area and have it high up....I am sure you will get it.

I would have liked the hardtop placed higher but I was hoisting around myself and thought it would be OK on a couple of big boxes but that wasn't the case. What i should have done is do it at another time when I could place it where I could see what I was doing. You can't paint when you can't see. I'll now probably have to redo the whole top over.

I redid the top. Sanded with #220, 3 coats epoxy primer, blocked flat with #400 then #600, base + 5 coats of clear. Will probably need to block out 2 coats to flatten. Slight sag on one side flat and hose hit the other side flat. That's why I did the 5 coats. On another note, pulled my back out when I took hardtop off these horses without help to move it inside for the night. Guess I forgot I'm not 20 YO anymore.

Looks great! Hope your back is feeling better soon. If you were closer I'd be happy to lend a hand. I know time is of the essence with the dropping temps.

LOOKS GOOD!

QUESTION: If it was already painted and cleared...and seemed to only have trash/debris issues......why did you epoxy it again??? And then shoot it all over again.

Just curious.

Thanks, all good. Temp not a factor now that painting is done. Back is a problem in that yesterday only able to spend 1 hr and today 2 hours on colorsanding. I go slow so will probably need another 8-10 hours ( at least) on colorsanding as i'm not even done with #1000. Ibuprofen every 4 hours is now the name of the game. It's a herniated disk, happened before.

I had to sand 3 spots feathered down to the Gelcoat I sprayed on. I know I could have spot epoxyed those spots and applyed base but decided to start with a fresh slate . Also figured the newly sprayed base would better adhere all over to the newly sprayed epoxy plus I wouldn't have to worry about blending. I don't like the idea of all that product on but it is, what it is. If this didn't work out, I would wait till next year and strip all off what I put on and then start over.

THANK YOU for the reply!

I truly hope all goes well and it lasts and lasts. I am not so worried about all of the amount of material on the hard top as much as I am the possible 'ring-out' effect that can show up later.
