Paint peels off after time on fender grates
The fender grates on my 72 Stingray have the paint separating from the metal and peeling off. It happened like that before. I bought the car in 1984 and it had been repainted, some years later the grates were looking pretty shabby because so much of the paint had fell off. I had the car repainted about 10-years ago and now the same thing is happening again. The car has been garaged and only has about 6,000 miles on the current paint.
Is there some special process that can help to stop this from happening? Thanks, Dale

YES...because these egg crates are chrome plated...so the surface prep is critical. GM used a zinc-chromate primer back in the day...and IF I am not mistaken...I believe someone posted a response on getting this similar type of primer from a different source other than it being automotive related. I believe it had to do with painting airplanes.
I have a special primer that is not made any longer that sticks to stainless steel and chrome.
Look into it and see if you can find that thread.
I do not want to leave you out to dry on this ...so please come back and let us know what you have found ( if anything)....because if not...I will describe what I do and you will then have to use another primer that hopefully will adhere.

If you're ok with losing the chrome edges you can do what we did on mine. I never liked the chrome and wanted it all body color, so sandblasted the gills using low pressure. Then used PPG K36 primer and BC/CC. It stuck real well and no problems 7 years later.

I have to say you are bold and daring. I know I could not just apply K36 primer on the chrome...even with it being etched....knowing my luck...it would begin to fly off before the car even left the shop.

Painting Egg Crate Grilles on a 72
Thanks everyone. I am going to keep the paint on my egg crates with the factory look. Going to provide my painter with the product info that you guys have provided here on the Corvette Forum. Hopefully he has these products on hand or can acquire them and my grilles will stay painted for many years to come. Wish me luck.
Maybe this will help.

The chrome on mine was so bad (bubbles/flaking) that there wasn't much left after blasting. Probably why the K36 stuck.
