Default Please read need advise with gears and stahl!!!!!!

Hey everyone I have a 2002 c5 with cam fast intake headers and I juy bought a set of 3:42 gears and yank SS 3200 stahl convertor my problem is the install kit for the differential is on back order and may be 3-5 months my buddy was putting stahl and gears in for $1000 and I would have 600 in gears, install kit . Or should I take it to RPM TRANSMISSION. For around $2000 and that's including them slapping my convertor in while they already have everything apart . My next question is would it be worth all that money to go from a 3:15 to a 3:42 ??? Or would a 3:15 gear and a Yank SS 3200 stahl be a good combo ????

What are your plans for the car?

going to the track with with a 3:15 and 3200 stahl may net less then desired results but just wanting to be a little quicker 'seat-o-the-pants' feeling on the street, you might be happy.

the 3:42's and 3200 is a nice combo - you might like the 3:42's with a 3600 a lot more ...

I run the street with 3:73's and a 4k stahl and love it

You will also need a tune, it's all in the tune

Yeah I don't plain on drag racing it but maybe just a few times just to see what it will do more than anything I want to have the perfect combo with the stall . My real issue is now I just got the gears in yesterday from motive and they don't know when the install kit will be available and between labor and gears I'd have around $1700 or I could go to rpm transmissions and they would hit me right at $2000 and would slap the convertor in for me or idea 3 just keep 3:15's and $700 to slap the convertor in ...

It's been a while since I did my rear and first stahl but I recall they charged me $1,200.00 for a Z06 rear (3:42's) installed - I'm not up on current prices but the 2K for rear and stall sounds about right...

If it were me ... I'd probably go with the new rear and a 3600 stahl but it's your car and $$ and decision...

If money is tight just go with the stahl but in the future if you decide to go with the 342's and higher stahl, you would be saving. I went from 2:73's to 3:42's to 3:73s and from stock to 3200 to a 4000. If I knew this was where I was going to end up, I could have saved by not doing the 'in between" stuff and then selling it for less then fifty cents on a dollar...

Yeah they want $1695 I believe to switch the diffs out and $350 labor but he will slap the stall in for nothing since he already has it out or if I wait 2-4 months till they start making the install kits my buddy will do it all for $1000 labor but I still have almost $600 in gears and the install kit which puts me at around $1600-1700 when I can go to rpm for $300-400 more and have it done or just say the hell with gears if its not that big of a change and just put the stall in ..... Also I really appreciate your time and help

your welcome!

I do not think you will be happy with 3:15's and a 3200 stahl. just my opinion... when i had the 3200 stahl, I was disappointed with the 60' times of 1.8X's when I changed the 60's came down to more like 1.5' and now I am cutting 1.3X's in good air. i think my 3200 was stalling at more like 2800. In a power-adder car, it may have stalled at 3200...

IMO a 3200 stahl works better with a supercharged (etc) car but a heads/cam car likes the higher stahl

Good luck ... please come back and post times if you get to the track, I can add you the the quick list on the sticky at the top of the page.

I appreciate all the help but after taking in your advise and calling Dave over at yank I think I'm going to change to a 3600yankk SS I'm still undecided on weather to switch to 3:42 or stay with 3:15's

That's just plain wrong man.......
If I could stumble on a spare LS1 block, I'd love to do a 382/3.
inch the cam up 5 degrees and not change anything else. Would be a sleeper.

Maybe next year. I'm back in 500" big block low nine second mode.

When I had my 00 vette after exhaust I did 3.90 and ss3800 when yank was making that stall. Great comb and the car went 11.6 at 118. Friend of mine with a 04 went with 3.42 and a ss3400 think he went 11.8 at 116. On the rear don't think you would need install kit unless you want new bearing. If you have a buddy doing swap 1k seems high if your paying cash I would think 500 is fair, you can buy a 3 rib with 3.42 for 700 and send your gears back
