99 C5 LS1 TTiX - 10.21@145.3 - Tips for 9s
This is a 99 C5 LS1 6 speed with the TTiX kit @ 18 psi. I made 4 passes on Friday using 26x11.50x17 MT ET Street Bias Plys and Firestone skinnies in the front. The rear tires had around 17.5 to 18 psi in them.
I'm using Rob and Gary's technique of leading with the throttle, but still need more practice.
Here is the 1st pass of the day:
Only issue with this pass was that I didn't feed enough throttle, bogged and had to slip the clutch to keep the momentum going.
Here is the final pass:
It looks like with the 60 foot this should have been a 9 second pass, but I hit the rev limiter in 1st with tire spin and then short shifted 2nd gear by about 200 rpm.

Any tips on squeezing out those last tenths of a second? From the logs it looks like my shifts are in the .10s to .15s range. Is this quick enough or should I try to hit all of them at .10 or less? I'm still on the stock 84k mile trans and diff, so it may not be possible.
I guess I need a perfect pass in the right conditions.

in my opinion you are running too much air pressure. drop them to 13-14 and you should be able to launch harder without spinning.

More seat time. Nice going.
Take some minor suggestions but don't change too much. You are close. I would consider a bigger slick even a 16" and lower pressure like Albert said.

This is hot psi correct? I typically check mine right after a pass and adjust accordingly.

Did you spin on the launch? What clutch?
I wouldn't worry about shifting. Just do the same thing you've been doing. Focus on the launch and 330' for now.

anything below 12 and you will get floaty on the top end. you might want to try a 2-step. i got pretty damn consistent using one.

In the showdown pass you came out very soft however everything was smooth. Come out more aggressive and stay smooth and the numbers will keep going down. The tires can spin on the launch a few revolutions and still net you a 1.4x.

The clutch is a Mcleod RXT Twin disk and an aluminum flywheel. Car weighs 3400 with me and a full tank of gas.
I agree, I've been thinking about getting a 2 step so that I could atleast repeat the same launch rpm each time and find one that is optimum.
Every pass was a race against someone so I was trying to cut a good light also.
On the showdown run, I was at 3500 and fed enough to achieve 4000 rpm, but didn't stick with the plan and continue the squeeze and it cost me on the 60 foot.
Finally on the 1.63, the guy I was racing tried to burn me down at the tree by taking a long time on his burnout and taking forever to light the bulbs. It actually helped me out because I had plenty of time to think.
I was at 3800 rpm and when the light went green the rpm shot to 5000 and never dropped. I was just a little too aggressive and got some tire spin at the top of first and bumped the 6800 rpm limiter. This must have thrown off my rhythm a touch and i missed the shift point from 2nd to 3rd.
I've got in-car video from this, but it was late and I'm not sure if anyone got some from the starting line. All-in-all thanks for the tips and I've got some more things to work on for the next event.

So lower tire pressure right down because if your are spinning at the top of first there's no remedy for that other than more traction.
Stick around 4000 rpm launch and try different clutch releases. I'd rather you launch lower and feed more throttle for now then higher and less throttle.
A 2 step with a stick car is tricky. I'd rather you get the feel for your clutch and launch without. You will learn more about the car/launch quicker.
A 26x11.5x16 et street will hook noticeably better. You should try them even if you have to borrow some.

If you are just making test passes, I would just concentrate on doing your own thing, don't worry about the light or what the guy in the next lane is doing.

Thanks, AJ. I may have to see about doing that for the track rental in May. Hopefully the weather will be good.
Here is a timeslip from last night. I got really close, but the track didn't hold real well after the 1/8 mile. I could feel the car moving around some. Tire pressure was 16 psi hot and I didn't get any tire spin at the top of first this time. This is a local track that does fairly well, but they had a hard rain the day before. This causes water to seep through the joints in the race surface. There were lots of wrecks and delays, so I only made one pass. 10.09@146

9 second car with a 10 second driver! Haha just playin, that's quicker that I went with a stick. Did they say anything about the 146mph? Better luck next time.

This was advertised as a street car night but a lot of race cars showed up and even jr. dragsters plus the usual group of motorcycles.
The number of cars combined with the crew checking the track and mopping up water made for a painfully slow night. A few people I talked to that watched my pass said they were surprised that I stayed in the gas. It never got sideways, but there was a lot of movement after the 1/8th mile. It made for a wild ride. They didn't say anything about the 146 mph but I didn't post my time either. After another car hit the wall at 10:30pm, I packed up and left. It just wasn't worth risking a crash.
I may try Sealy soon. The track is way out of town and only true racers usually show up. It's where I got my first 10 second slip so maybe it will be good for a 9, too.

Excellent runs, the short time I owned it, my SRT 8 TT and ran consistant 10.0X @ 140, terrible time leaving, even with the built auto, my trans brake was having big time issues, to have a stick and run these times, pat yourself on the back, your doing great!!! really lot going on with the stick, I just ran my 440" Z06 and had terrble time with my 60's so enjoy, different animal the stick!!! I can't wait to see you get seat time and hit some 9'S ..Get it!!!

If you do not have a 2 step it is a must IMO. Unless the car is geared big time you will need the 2 step to help with spool. When I had 3.90 gears I could launch at 6k at slip the clutch enough to get going but once I moved to the 3.42 I needed some boost on the launch! However if you do this I wouldnt recommend putting the switch on the clutch pedal. I had mine installed on the shift lever so I could release it when I wanted and not when you raise the clutch pedal off the floor (which would obviously cause the 2 step to deactivate).
Here is a 1.42 60' with the LPE 2 step set at 4900 and a quick slip of the clutch, twin 58mm hpp turbo kit on 12 psi (740whp) and Long ZR1 gears in the trans!
