Default First Run A4 C5...Want to go 11's ?

Hey there guys. I'm the owner of a 99 A4 C5 Corvette. It has been one of my dream car since I'm a little boy and finally afforded one 3 months ago. At first wanted a M6 but I'm getting lazy and like the auto transmission ( Except the fact it looks to be weak a bit )

I like drag racing a lot, I go the the track every week to take a look at different setups and stuff. I race maybe 7-8 runs a week.

My car is a Z51 and currently has those mods :

3.15 gears
Vararam Cold Air

I run on 275/40/18 BFG street tires. They hook not bad if heated well and get me 2.0 60 Ft everytime.

Best time is 12.9 @ 107 MPH. I guess that's pretty much the usual times for a A4 older c5.

I wanna get into 11's this year...What would be the best mods to get me there?

I ordered 1 3/4" long tube headers and a B&M transmission cooler to help keep those temps down a bit. I'll currently looking for a LS6 intake manifold too.I'll get a dyno retune when the headers and the manifold are in too.

I've read a torque converter/stall would help a lot along with good tires to help launching...Would that help also on the street???

I've also read about the weak a4 transmission.I'll change fluids when installing my cooler and hope it will stay alive as long as possible...I live in QC,Canada and getting stuff like a transmission shipped here is pretty expensive...

Thanks guys!

High 12s is about right for your current set up..... Can you go 11s without engine mods? Maybe, but it's pretty hard to pick up a whole second with just headers, CA, gears and a converter....you'll likely end up doing heads/cam as well to get there...... And some good sticky DRs too..
Don't worry about getting a special trans shipped, there's plenty of 4L60E out there and many trans shops have a lot of experience with them and can do a performance rebuild on them if/when you need it.... Get a trans cooler for sure in the meantime....
How far are you from Federal Performace in Montreal?

He's right on the money!

The first time out in our 2004 coupe we went 13.3 bone stock (even had suit cases in the car).

After adding a Yank SS4000, 3.90 gear, Vararam, drag radial and tune we dropped down to 12.2.

Next step was ARH 1 & 7/8" LTs and X-pipe with no cats and in good air now go 11.5x's. We did add a Stocker camshaft when we did headers but it's stock lift and stock duration so I don't think it helped that much.

Follow the recipe from Capthuff and you'll be there!

Dave at Yank will know what's best for your needs. I've purchased two converters from him for two different cars. One street/track car and my current track *****.

Where are you located? Maybe you can find someone local using the CF that has a looser converter and will let you drive their car around so you'll get a feel for it and figure out what your tolerance level is. We don't but I wouldn't hesitate to drive ours with the SS4000 daily (provided you put a nice transmission cooler in to help with heat). OD transmissions and computer controlled cars with loose converters are much different than driving a muscle car from the 60's with the same converter. They're not as bad as you think. Don't make the mistake of getting a 3400 or 3600 and then saying "boy, I wish I would have gone looser". They're a PITA to change and you only want to do it once.

There's no issue with driving a 4000 + stall on the street with the converters that are being made these days. I had a 5000 stall C5 daily driver for a few years

I'd say these guys will steer you right.

But I think you would like the SS3600.

Great converter from what I hear! All depends on your goals and what you can tolerate when you DD.

You can break 11s with a stall and boltons. My f body did it with a ss3600 stall.
Best time I was able to get with stock stall was 12.6

I agree. Heard a lot of good things about it.

Just remember, going too high with a stall will make sticky tires almost mandatory!
The STR ratio is something to look at. That is the torque multiplication of the convertor. As you build higher horsepower, the more that STR# will matter. If you are racing, and run slicks, all is good. If you have a DD with stock compound tires, as you make more hp, you will simply blow your tires away on a launch (= loss)
I have a SY3500 with a lowly 1.63 STR (SS3600 has 2.5) that I left in because I was building more hp, and didn't want to blow my tires away.
I am now FI, making good hp, running 335 Toyo R1s, and it has basically NO traction anywhere in 1st gear. I just have to feather it every time I launch from a stop or low speed. If I had a convertor with a higher STR, I would just have to launch in 2nd gear.

Updates!

Car is stored for the winter so Ill order parts next week.
Ill go with a Yank SS 3600 stall and a G5X1 cam kit from LG with a 112 LSA... Gotta love that lopppppe

I also received my CNC'd katech heads. Wow.

Im still debating going for 305/35/18 radials on my DD wheels or buy 17" wheels just for drag with 275/40/17 radials.

Im also worried about the stock transmission with the heads/cam package.
