My C5 Corvette LS1 vs 392 Dodge Charger SRT

I had the opportunity to line up and race a Dodge Charger SRT-8 with the 6.4L V8 a couple days ago.

I don't know what mods the Charger has but it is probably stock or near stock judging from the timeslip.

The race was very close, I had a good chat with the Charger owner afterwards.

The track weather (Bithlo, FL) was chilly, around high 50s.

Picture of the timeslip (C5 Corvette is #3, Charger SRT 392 is #22):

The only performance mod my C5 has is a SLP Blackwing intake; the car is a 2003 LS1 with 4L60E, 3.15 gears, and Z51 suspension.

I posted this thread to give an idea of how a near stock LS1 C5 would fare against a stock or near stock Charger SRT with the 392 on the quarter mile.

Thanks! It was a very fun run, I thought I was gonna win but then the Charger slowly creeped up towards the end of the quarter mile track.

Both our cars were neck and neck towards the end of the quarter mile; had the guy been slower just a tad (.0x seconds) at the light, I would have won.

It was fun talking to the Charger owner after the race, he likes Corvettes in addition to Chargers and I like Chargers as much as Corvettes so we talked about how close the race was and complimented each other's cars.

Good info!
Ive got a '14 R/T 6MT with exhaust, intake, and tune. They both feel good but I think my vette is still the faster car.
My C5 has intake, gutted cats, LT headers, Magnaflow axlebacks, EFI Tune, and 3:42 gears (A4)

^^
Your C5 can do mid 12s easy on the quarter mile with good weather and track conditions with just street tires.

I have raced a Challenger RT on the quarter mile before but I didn't get a timeslip. The Challenger was at least two car lengths behind me by the time I crossed the finish line. The Challenger owner had nitrous installed on his car at the time but didn't use it for the race.

Yeah our cars respond very well to mods. I've gone from 108mph (stock) to 115mph trap speed with just intake/headers/tune.

Good run with the Charger, there are always dozens of them at my local track and they can be fun to run against since most are mid 12s cars.

That's a great pass with only a Blackwing! Looks like your car needs a little more breathing on the top end if you want to beat him. Headers, B&B Bullets, Vararam and tune put me at 12.3 a while back. You'd prob run even better in those conditions with the same mods.

^^Thanks!

The car is rolling on Michelin Pilot A/S runflats in case you wanted to know.

I am planning on having a local shop install one of their C5 performance n/a packages.

Their n/a package includes items like GS intake, custom cam, LG pro long tube headers, corsa exhaust, and a dyno tune. The car will probably run mid 12s then, I might even get a low 12 on a good night at the Bithlo, FL quarter mile track.

I was planning to get procharger a while back but I didn't want to risk breaking stuff while at the track so I decided against getting one.

I go to my local drag strip at least once a week mostly on Friday nights for their test and tune (lots of street cars). I used to go on Saturdays too but it is mostly visited by the pros with their track only cars.

With just those mods, I would assume it would be faster than the Challenger.

Car and Driver got 12.6 at 119 out of their 2014 SRT8 392 on unprepped tarmac, and the 2015 has the new eight-speed, which should make it even quicker (12.4 according to Dodge)... those are VERY good numbers versus a base C5. Which body style Charger was it? I can't see your timeslips, unfortunately, as I'm on a work computer at the moment.

This is the car that I raced, It is the SRT Charger body style. I think it is the early 392 models:

The Charger SRT that I raced finished the quarter mile in 12.694 seconds at 111.7 miles per hour with a 1.961 seconds 60 foot. The driver's reaction time was .164 seconds.

Me and my C5 Corvette finished the quarter mile in 12.897 seconds at 107.33 miles per hour with a 1.914 seconds 60 foot. My reaction time was .010 seconds.

It was a very close race, I lost to the guy in his Charger SRT 392 only by .0497 seconds.

Did you take out some tire pressure? If not, take out about 5-6 pounds and you should see a tenth or two better time. Great time.

I lowered both the rear tires' pressure to approximately 25 psi (hot, not cold tire Pressure). The front tires were inflated to about 36 psi (cold tire pressure).

I didn't want to deflate the rear street tires any lower than 25 psi hot. If the car had drag radials, I would though.
